Think of the possibilities. Big creatures coming your way and you'd have to block and lose most of your creatures. Just declare no blockers, then cast this card and add another token to the fray. All on their turn. Then you swing for a lot.
You can cast this card even if there's no damage to prevent, in case you just need another token creature for other purposes.

Another Fog variant, but with some utility. Turbofog with tokens, maybe?

Pros like me will make use Fog quite a lot but this not only fogs but it populates for only one extra colorless mana. That is quite the value.

This may be silly, but does this look like Elspeth in a Selesnya hat to anyone else?

I feel this is one of the more reasonably costed populate cards. It's a fog that costs 1 more but you have the potential of putting a token out. Very nice.

Doesn't the way the card is worded make it significantly better than fog+populate most of the time
Instead of no combat damage being dealt, combat damage is only dealt to creatures. Which means that when an opponent is swinging for lethal you can block favorably i.e. gain some card advantage by eating their smaller creatures, and let anything you can't or don't want to deal with go through.

Perhaps one of the best fog variants. Since it only prevents damage to you, that sadly does not protect your planeswalkers, but it does mean that if you want to block (possibly with that new token you just made) to kill an attacking creature, that option is still open.

It's not often that a card comes along that actually has the potential to see play in Pauper. This card, however, may just be it. For the price of a Fog+1 you get a pretty nifty combat trick that may allow you to hurt your opponent and/or destroy some of his creatures, while also, if you have a token available, reinforcing your own army.
A girl at the prerelease ran four of these. Her games went really long, but she made a lot of birds.

a 4-of in a green token deck. Fog w a populate attached to it. Boom.. However, i am never going to make such a deck, cause it would blow

Quite overlooked on this card is the fact that it says "Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to you this turn." So you could still block and kill one of their attacking guys while letting a different one through to no avail. And then, of course you can populate.

You can still eat the attacking creatures with your blockers. Pretty awesome. Forces you to run cookie-cutter cards like Call of the Conclave though. It's not worth doing this for one saproling.

Fog is one of those cards that has a low mana cost, but won't be played in the early game;it'll be saved to hose an alpha strke. So paying the extra mana for basically the same effect and populate is quite worth it. 3.5/5.

I have been out of the magic scene for quite a while (other than buying cards over the years because of nostalgia). I recently purchased Selesnya Surge deck and I am attempting to modify it a bit(still have a few of my older cards). Would this go well with Isochron Scepter ? I don't have a lot of expendable cash, so I am doing what I can with it.

It is also worth noting that it can be advantageously used after the declare attackers step, rather than the declare blockers step. That way, your newly created token can block right away, and you can potentially rid your opponent of an extra attacking creature.
This and Rootborn Defenses can give you a certain degree of control on the opponent's turn, which is always nice. If you're playing tokens, that is.

In limited I've stopped seeing these as effects with Populate tagged onto them. I'm seeing them as Populate cards with effects tagged onto them. Nothing is more reassuring than having one of these, a Rootborn Defenses, Eyes in the Skies, and/or Trostani's Judgment in your hand while you have even just a 3/3 Centaur out. The instant speed increases the value greatly for these cards.

I would like to use this with Cackling Counterpart and Archaeomancer. Isochron Scepter is likely better (or good thrown in the mix), but unfortunately not in Standard.

Can be a useful way to deal with Geist of Saint Traft. Cast this after the attack to prevent the damage and populate a blocker which will (hopefully) take out Traft himself.

The synergy almost makes me wish that Selesnya's 8/8 elemental tokens didn't have vigilance. Why sure it's okay for you to attack me! It's not like I have any blockers is it? I guess there's always the 5/5 wurms though.

Good when you want to prevent damage and crank out a second 8/8 elemental token.

I love this card and I honestly think it's a solid 4-of in any populate deck, just like Rootborn Defenses. I've lost count of how many times I've caught opponents unprepared for a fog + an extra 3/3 token that counterattacks on my next turn.
They attack with two 4/4's into your two 3/3's? Skip blockers, cast this and hit them back for 9 while their creatures are tapped on their turn.

So I played this in MTGO when my opponent blocked with creatures with deathtouch. It shielded all of my creatures too though it doesn't mention preventing combat damage to my creatures, so my creatures all lived and his were dealt fatal damage. This isn't correct is it?

I think the populate effect is sometimes more powerful than the other effect, depending on what kind of deck you're playing against.

Two mana instant speed token. Rated 3.5. I swear, it is like some people have never played this game. You buy a turn against aggro decks, which is a big deal, and there is a bonus effect. Or you read into tokens, and get something crazy. Seance is a thought, GW ramps you into it, while Green itself isn't half bad at graveyard shenanigans.
IMO, populate is strong enough for a rogue deck to surprise take a tournament, people undervalue instant speed creatures.

I run 4 of these with Armada Wurm, Attended Knight, Captain of the Watch, Crusader of Odric, Knight Watch, Wild Beast Master, and Chorus of Might. I try to avoid using my G/W populate deck cuz its so OP.

This one would go in my Talrand, Sky Summoner and Trostani, Selesnya's Voice populate deck.
