Afterlife isn't a bad card in EDH. It's instant-speed, fairly-cheap, unconditional removal. You'll most likely be killing a creature that costs more than three mana, and a single 1/1 token doesn't amount to anything in that format.
The problem is that it's white; that color already has the best single-shot removal in the game. When card advantage is of high importance, it's best to keep the one-for-one removal spells to a minimum. It's hard for Afterlife when it has to compete against Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Condemn, and Wing Shards. There's just no room left for it.
The card would have been awesome, were it printed in red, green, or blue.

Awesome white removal. Cheap, instant and easy to splash if you're playing multiple colors.
Protip: Use it in a token deck! If your opponent tries to Maelstrom Pulse/Echoing Decay your Spectral Procession token, simply destroy it and get another token to make your opponent's spell fizzle :D
No, but seriously, this is a pretty good alternative if you can't get your hands on Unmake or Swords to Plowshares-ish cards.

Ever since Balance, White as been the color being a dirty rotten cheatyface. Do we have an integrity problem? Perhaps. Maybe. Abso-friggin-lutely. But it's all color pie Kosher. (White is also the color of Lawyers and bullsh*t in general.)
