Red burns. White burns...with STYLE.

Unlike most traditional damage-reflection cards this one has no color restriction, and does not target the source that deals damage, which means Banefire and Hexproof cannot stop you.

Shining Shoal
I'd have to say this is overall a downgrade but it's not bad.

So it's a more flexible Boros Fury-Shield because it's rare? Pretty lame...

This card is gonna make a lot of people angry. Which is a good thing, probably.

It appears that the rulings for this card are contradicting. If the target of the card becomes invalid prior to damage being deflected does it invalidate the entire card and therefore no damage is prevented or is damage still prevented just not assigned.

Also if you were to be attacked for 4 damage, could you set up divine deflection to prevent 10 damage in order to prevent any further damage this turn? If so would it assign 4 damage to the opponent rather than 10 (providing that no further damage was attempted)?

This card appears to be more powerful than it first appears. A player really doesn't need to totally undo a damage spell or source, just enough to let his own creatures or hide to survive. In addition to not having to dedicate his entire mana base to protect his creatures or life total, it acts as a direct damage burn spell or creature/planeswalker removal for no additional cost. Nevermind the fact that, for combat damage, it's a one sided fog and burn spell all rolled up into one, something a white weenie deck wouldn't mind having.

O yeah, there's no targeting in the prevention step.

I prefer Shining Shoal because of its alternate cost, but this is one White cheaper and can redirect damage from multiple sources.

It's a solid card that makes people think twice about attacking you, which makes it a great multiplayer/EDH card.

It's great to be able to say to your opponents that they'll regret attacking you, and to have a direct way to make good on your promise.

Avacyn Restored seems to me to have a lot of grammer issues and poor wordings. I've seen unnecessary commas after "ands" and such and the wording for this card is so confusing. what it is literally saying is that it prevents X damage to multiple things. Therefore if my opponent plays a pyroclasm, for example and does 2 damage to all my creatures, if i pay 2 for X for divine deflection, all damage being dealt to my creatures should be prevented. if it works how the rulings say then it she be worded as follows: "Prevent the next X damage that would be dealt to you and/or permanents you control, divided as you choose..." Like fireball's wording. I feel like the wording is just horrible for this whole set. Does anyone agree?? Has WOC changed some personnel? :/

@Cyberium: It sounded like you were saying that this would work against a 5+ Banefire. That is not the case.

If I misunderstood what you said... Sorry.

Ok this may sound dumb but I need a ruling on this. I was told by a DCI Judge that the damage from Divine Deflection can be spread among multiple targets... The card does not state this and the oracle text doesn't either. Since there are many cards that state on them that they can spread damage among any number of targets, I would think that this would also state that if it was true.

So, can the damage only target 1 creature or player, or can it target any number of creatures and/players?

@Kage_Chitoshi You just need to read rulings carefully, if the target becomes illegal while the spell is on stack the whole spell fizzles. However if the spell resolves it creates a trigger that redirects next X damage dealt to you to the previous target, if after triggering divine reflection would deal damage to that same target it ignores shroud/hexproof etc.

Slightly better version of Captain's Maneuver. It's prevent and deal damage instead of redirect, which is either a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

I like this better than Shining Shoal because this can stop an army of zombies.

@ Kage_Chitoshi: Your judge is a moron, and shouldn't be allowed to be a judge. It deals damage to "target creature or player." Not creature(s). Not player(s). It only deals damage to one target.

This card is extraordinary in token vs token decks. Say both you and your opponent have 4 1/1 flying spirit tokens. He swings with all, you block with all, then play this. Now he has 0 tokens, you have all 4, and he's down 4 life. Love it.

I have a question that seems to have no answer yet and hope someone can clear this for me. Let me keep it simple, the card states that it prevents damage to all my permanents correct? Now say an opponent uses Pyroclasm and i had 3 creatures (for simplicity sake there 2/2's). Now i cast Divine Deflection paying (2)W to prevent the 2 damage to all my creatures. Now my question, does this card deal damage equal to what I payed and deals 2 damage to target creature or player? Or does it deal damage equal to what i prevented in which my case would be 6 damage? Seeing as the card does not say one way or the other, does not say deal damage equal to what i prevented, but on the flip side it does not say this card deals X damage to target creature or player where X is the converted mana cost(what you paid for). Someone gave a similar example but didn't say how much he payed for the cards cost. Thanks for reading me out.

@Dragonlord132:

Except this prevents damage from multiple targets to multiple different creatures and you at the same time. It also lets you choose where the burn goes. A lot of times I'd rather kill a creature with this than burn a player.

Considering tossing this in with my Stonehorn Dignitary.

After stalling the combat phase for a few turns, I could feign having run out of bounce/flicker effects.

The opponent swings all out, using the first combat phase available in a while.

*slap*

I love the surprise factor this has over Vengeful Archon, and that it can target creatures. Yup, definitely considering hunting myself down a couple copies.

This pretty much makes Captain's Maneuver scrap paper.

Assuming the following: Player 1 has 3 life, Player 2 also has 3 life. Player 1 attacks player 2 for 6 damage, none of which gets blocked, but player 2 uses Divine Deflection to prevent 3 damage, and redirects it to player 1... do both players lose? Or does player 2 lose? Not even get a chance to play this card?

I dont understand if the second rule says if the target is illegal the whole spell is countered and the last rule says if the target is illegal its still prevents the damage idk?

@Dekna:

From what I understand, the card prevents X damage divided as you choose among yourself and your permanents. I believe they would have said "and/or each permanent you control" if they had intended for it to work the way you were describing. For your pyroclasm example this means that you can prevent two damage divided as you choose among yourself and your creatures. You would also deal two damage to a target creature or player.
