Stop a potential blocker or attacker and do some nice damage, a great card.

Your opponent knows something is going to go horribly wrong when you drop 3 Giant Growths onto one of his creatures. Then this tidy bit of hell comes out. Great effect, at a very reasonable casting cost.

excellent artwork.
a very fine spell and yet another way to deal direct-damage kind of damage to opponent...
what if you had a creature or permanent that gave a creature +1/+1 counters till the end of turn... if you have backlash, pump up your opponents creature and play backlash... it's just fun kind of stuff lol in effect- backlash plays like fireball and your creature pays the X ;)
It's an instant too, very flexible.

I somehow think that i would use this rather than Traitor's Roar. Wonder though why they have different oracle wording.
And btw, you can use this if an opponent takes one of your creatures with Slave of Bolas for example

Planeswalkers.
the card says deals damage to a controller, can the planeswalker count as the controller?
Planeswalkers don't count as controllers, but it doesn't matter - you can choose to redirect the damage to the planeswalker.

I just love the Idea of an ulamog getting grabbed by the legs (or tentacles) and swung into the suddenly not so ***y Eldrazi summoner ^^

This and Delirium are two of my favorite cards, because punishing people for super-pumping a creature is rather fun. To be honest, though, I believe Delirium's slightly better. Yes, you can only play it on your opponent's turn, but they also can't counter it by finding a way to tap their creature, and in my mind that is a major downside.

Last time I played this I was targeting Dread. It didn't just result in a healthy six damage. Since Backlash forced Dread to deal damage to it's controller, Dread was forced to kill itself. :)
run four shelter anceint with it so their creatures are huge best thing is its instant speed

I prefer Delirium. That can't be used to tap the strongest blocker, but Backlash is useless if your opponent has a way to tap his creature, and I'd rather have Kamahl deal 6 damage to my opponent than 3 damage to me.

Doesn't this absolutely murder Voltron shenanigans in EDH?
Play this to hit them with their own creature, bust out an Act of Treason to smack them again, then Fling that mofo.
Sure, maybe a little expensive both cardwise and manawise, but it's fun. FUN.

Doesn't this work on Dark Depths too?

This is fantastic in Commander, where people play cards like Blightsteel Colossus and Hamletback Goliath all the time. The instant speed and tapping effect mean that it stops that creature from attacking you the turn they cast it. I guess I could characterize it as a Fend Off stapled to an Act of Treason, which seems like value. I play this in my Darigaaz EDH deck for the flavor, but also because it is really good. 4.5/5

EDIT: yet again i forget Phage's affect only applies for combat damage
Blightsteel Colossus: Derp!
