I thought this was good, until I saw 4BBRR where I thought it was 2BBRR... Terrible, as expected. But hey - 8 mana 5/5 legend from legends, we should be glad it even has abilities!

8 mana does not equal 5/5 trampler + subpar ability. But, then again, he is from Legends.

Why does such an awesome name belong to such a terrible card?

Thankfully he's legendary. I was about to freak out and start yelling POWER CREEP!
A 5/5 Trampler + AMAZING ability for only deserves Mythic status.
I fully expect this to be reprinted in M11.

Let's break it down. 5/5, that's at least 5 mana. In red, AND black, with no drawback, that's an easy 6, minimum. Off-color trample? +1. Legendary almost compensates for that though, but really, it just wins him his rather interesting ability; which I seriously believe wouldn't be so overlooked if he had a lower casting cost. There is nothing wrong with this card that a Manaflare couldn't fix.

I, too, initially interpreted the as a for some reason... At least he has a unique ability, so he's not strictly terrible.

I'd run him just for the name. Come on, I would pay out the ass to be named Axelrod Gunnarson.

Somehow I like him. Good name, awesome art. The abilities actually fit well. He can trample over small creatures, killing them, dealing trample damage to the opponent, gaining you life AND dealing damage with his special ability to the opponent. With grand melee he could be fun too.

@ Dr.Pingas: That system of evaluating a card's mana cost didn't work fifteen years ago, and it doesn't now. Expensive creatures can afford to have more abilities and power for their mana cost, as they tend to be much less efficient then the removal your opponents have. Furthermore, they're coming into play against a battlefield that has had time to be populated; most fatties need to address concerns like being chump-blocked and making an immediate impact on the board, lest they simply don't have any impact depsite their size and expense.

Not too great unless you have an Arena and a way to untap it...

I mean, too expensive, sure, but come on people use your head, maybe mill/reanimation deck, not in the sense you are trying to mill them, just in the sense you want this in the graveyard to reanimate. Book Burning, Entomb, Buried Alive, and so on. My personal preference, however, is Vampiric Dragon, but both definitely have a place, maybe even together.
BUT GUYS!! When he slays a creature, you get 1 life!!! And they take 1 damage!!!!!!!! OVERPOWERED!!!!!

With a name like that, this guy needs to join a Metal Band...or start one.

Kusari-Gama probably gives him the best chance to deal damage to the most targets. They either block and lose a good portion of their board, or they let a creature with colorless breathing through. Sure, there's far cheaper strats, but if we're trying to come up with ways to use this guy...

He's totally going in my deathtouch + tap-for-damage deck. If you hand him a Fire Whip and a Thornbite Staff to turn him into the beefiest Goblin Sharpshooter ever, you can lay the smack down on every creature on the battlefield and direct the targeted damage as you will. Your buddy will wish he wasn't playing that Goblin deck...

Try slapping an Unscythe, Killer of Kings on this guy in EDH. Opponent looses 1 life, you gain 1 life, exile the creature, and get a 2/2 Zombie Token.
