"Kobolds are a red creature" priceless. 5/5 just for that.

It may seen stupid because as 99% of people can tell, its a red card just from the background color, but unless they specifically write down on the card that it is a red creature, it would actually be considered colorless. Anything with a cost of 0 is colorless by default.

Kobolds lose 1 on 1 to Insidious Bookworms.

Trying to find reasons to play this instead of 'thopter.

lame things like Keldon Warlord and Horde of boggarts just aren't doing it for me.

So, gatherer says there are 2 other 0cc kobolds, so lets see, 12 kobold plus 4 thopters, 4 shield spheres, 4 phyrexian thingys. Throw in Ad Nauseum, Tendrils of agony and some tutors.... :)

Callipsa: I'd throw a Coat of Arms in just for the overkill.

And "Kobolds are a red creature" is necessary, because a spell/permanent's color is determined by the color(s) of mana in the mana symbols in its casting cost.

I have a flavorful (uber-Vorthos) "The Labyrinth" theme deck with kobolds, Mystifying Maze, a goblin guide, a Nip Gwylion, a Gempalm Sorcerer, Garruk's Companion, and a Little Girl. It always wins against my friends' "The Neverending Story" deck and "The Wizard of Oz" deck. :)

I love the absurdly ferocious, terrifying art they put on this free 0/1 creature. It looks like it should eat dragons and crap demons.

I just realized something about this little guy and his brethren. They're not on the reserve list. Could we see a reprint of them in the future? Oh, I hope so.

Ornithopter outclasses this in my books, since ornithopter has better toughness and overall is much more abusable as a {0} cost artifact creature with flying as well.

I actually have a Wizard of Oz deck, I will play you Carnophage_4ever!
(Also a Matrix deck, an Inception deck, a deck partly based on Walk With Me in Hell by Lamb of God, and a deck with 4 Lagac Lizards and 56 Mountains.)

Okay I understand that this card helps facilitate certain deck options, but it is in no way a 4/5.

To people who say this is garbage compaired to memnite and ornithopter. This is non-artifact witch make infine spells in a turn with cloudstone curio. And think about when it was printed this was awesome back then.

This is actually better than 0-cost artifacts for a number of reasons, the biggest one being Cloudstone Curio. Two kobolds and the curio make easy Storm fuel. Ornithopter and company work in a greater number of decks, true, but this has its uses. And the fact that it's a kobold makes it far cooler.
Now I'm just looking forward to the free 1/1 Green creature...

@ Arachnos

Then it's not strictly worse.

A card that is strictly worse is one that is identical to another card, but is worse by just 1 aspect. For example, Scathe Zombies is strictly worse than Walking Corpse, because although they're both 2/2 Black Zombies, Scathe Zombies costs 2Black while Walking Corpse costs 1Black.

A common example of a "strictly better" argument is Fugitive Wizard and Memnite. Sure, Fugitive Wizard costs Blue while Memnite costs 0, but what if you had Azami, Lady of Scrolls on the field? You'd then have a 1-cost Archivist instead.
What if you played Mass Appeal? Memnite wouldn't draw you that extra card. What if you played Kessig Macontents? Memnite wouldn't add 1 more damage to the spell.

Not only that, but you JUST proved that it isn't strictly better! You said "Unless you consider being red or being a kobold as an advantage for some reason". What if you had a deck that benefited from being Red? Would Ornithopter be better? Most likely not.

People always say "Strictly better", but in all truth, there are very, VERY few examples of cards which as strictly better than others.

Strictly worse than Ornithopter, Phyrexian Walker and Memnite. Unless you consider being red or being a kobold as an advantage for some reason.

Wait... "epitaph"? How did that Bearand get killed by a 0/1?

@Arachnos - He was overwhelmed by a kobold that was under the tutelage of one of the stronger ones (Overlord, Taskmaster, or Rohgahh).

@Trygon_Predator - Take a look at Dryad Arbor.
