I wish it could destroy black creatures. Oh well, still a cool card. If only the white member of the cycle had as much to contribute as this one...

indeed, Claov. while the activation cost of this one is {1} cheaper than Dark Banishing or Seal of Doom , the activation ocst of the white one is {1} more expensive than its "original". on the other side, this card does not inhibit the targeted creature to regenerate...

great when used with Salvaging Station. The capsule's effect will trigger it, causing devastation to creatures.

Great card, great effect and cheap cost...the setback is, it doesnt prevent regeneration and it doesnt kill black creatures... still a good removal thingy...

nice turn one play because then your friends annoying blue deck can't counterspell it once it's out

I keep on wanting to use this card and always end up cutting it from a final build eventually. It's just not that good.

Kind of a useless Doom Blade unless you have some ulterior use for it.

Hmm... Doomblade on a... Capsule. Maybe one could use it with Lodestone Golem, or some other artifact based card... It bears thinking about, anyway.

When people realize this is one of the only card (if not the only) that can off Emrakul, the aeons torn before he gets a chance to attack it might see some sideboard play :)

ONLY WAY FOR MONO BLACK TO DEAL WITH IONA

I see that people think this can destroy iona and emrakul, my question about this is the fact that it's a colored spell, so how does it destroy those 2, or how can it even be played when iona is out. some help with that would be nice.

That aside, this is a pretty decent card, I would heavily consider running it if I didn't always play a friend whose decks are almost always black.

Okay so this isn't that good against Iona, because it's black. I use this though in my Esper deck, only because I use two Lodestone Golem's and I don't want to screw myself over. But anyways, I actually am going to take these out and put in my two Brittle Effigy's that I got recently. Those are better overall, by far.

InfernalIncinerator:

I think the reason they say this can deal with Iona is to have it out before Iona hits the field. Iona states that spells of the chosen color cannot be played/cast, but if the Capsule is already in play, then it's not being cast. Likewise, the ability isn't be cast, but activated, thus getting around Iona's nullifying ability.

Same goes for Emrakul. It has protection from colored SPELLS, but not colored permanents. If you have the Capsule out before Emrakul hits the field, then you can activate this, kill Emrakul, and it'll simply be reshuffled into the opponent's deck.

So yeah, it's versatile. It'd be nice if it could hit black, but if it could, it would likely be too powerful to be warrented a common with a {B} casting cost. The fact it'll get through to artifact creatures is a plus, putting it on level with Doomblade, and surpassing Doomblade by getting around things with protection from spells.

I can see this being better than Doom Blade in a metalcraft deck. Too bad the only black card with metalcraft as of Scars of Mirrodin is the uninteresting Bleak Coven Vampires, but it can't set you back that far to splash for decent creature removal, especially in an artifact deck.

Looks like.... Glissa, the Traitor just found her favourite toy... now thats what I call serious control.... WTF! Glissa's first strike & death touch wasn't enough... lets give her infinite terror to play with. =o

@Fordin - True...but all it ends up doing is getting the damn thing shuffled back into your opponent's library. If all you need is a turn or two more, it's great...but if you opponent draws it again or has a way of searching it out, you're still screwed (unless you can recur the Capsule).

Remember, this card was released before Doom Blade, so if you find yourself thrust back in time before the summer of 2009, this is your card. Plus works well with Esper and metalcraft. 4*

Okay quick stupid question. Can this cards "sacrifice to destroy" effect be activated by another cards effect that states "Sacrifice an artifact", such as Kuldotha Rebirth without paying the cost on this card?

There are pros to death spells as an activated ability. Copy with Rings of Brighthearth, harder to counter. Plus pro metalcraft, easier to bring back than an instant spell. Ping with Disciple of the Vault. All sorts of fun. I'm really pleased with this.
Edit: @SauceyCoffee: You can only sacrifice the permanent as a cost for one ability. Not for several. It's not an effect that says "when you sacrifice it". In other words, you can sacrifice it for the Rebirth, but then it's gone so you aren't able to pay the cost "Sacrifice Executioner's Capsule".

I'm building a black/white artifact affinity/metal craft deck in Modern. This card is useful to me for several reasons:

1. It is an artifact and therefore helps me with affinity and metal craft.
2. Only costs a single mana to play.
3. Psychological Warfare. When this is in play, players know you have a "Doomblade". They will hesitate to play precious creatures. It puts them on the defensive. In addition, often times it becomes the first target for artifact destruction spells. This is a mistake on their part because my artifact creatures are extremely deadly in surprise fashions. Not having that disenchant or naturalize in hand because you wanted a creature usually kills them off.

Obviously this card has some drawbacks, and isn't prefect in every deck. But It works great in mine :D

Another use would be for a hellbent deck, much like the Seals. Works pretty well within it.

Of course, it's a hellbent deck, so when I say "works pretty well" I mean "quit using Vision Skeins you guys this isn't funny anymore."

Just realized this can be tutored with Trinket Mage.

@SauceyCoffee

117.10. Each payment of a cost applies to only one spell, ability, or effect. For example, a player can’t sacrifice just one creature to activate the activated abilities of two permanents that each require sacrificing a creature as a cost. Also, the resolution of a spell or ability doesn’t pay another spell or ability’s cost, even if part of its effect is doing the same thing the other cost asks for.

So, no, the sacrifice cost of Kuldotha Rebirth can be paid by sacrificing this artifact, but once it is paid, you cannot do two things: you can't sacrifice executioner's capsule in response (a permanent can only be sacrificed once, because upon sacrifice, it is immediately gone, you can't respond to sacrifices), and you can't activate the ability on executioner's capsule. That is, if you pay the additional cost on Kuldotha Rebirth, by sacrificing this, then you can't pay the ability cost on executioner's capsule (because it's been sacrificed), and you haven't paid the ability cost on this to use the ability (the cost is 2 mana, not sacrificing it -- sacrificing it is done in response to paying the cost).

Benefits of this over Doom Blade:
-If you play it early, it effectively gives you an uncounterable Doom Blade later in the game.
-It adds to your artifact count which can be great for Affinity and other artifact-based decks.
-It's immune to hand removal like Duress and Thoughtseize. If anything happens to your hand, you have this as insurance.
-Your opponent always has to watch out for this and it might strongly halt their board development.

Disadvantages:
-Not quite instant speed. You can't just play it at any time - you need to have it out already to use it.
-Your opponent knows that it's coming and will play around it.
-It effectively costs B more if you want to use it right now which can especially suck if you don't have double swamp when you want to use it - it effectively becomes a turn slower than Doom Blade.
-Krosan Grip.

Overall, Doom Blade is still the better card but this can be very nice in some decks and situations.
