There's a reason this creature is a prime target of removal. It IS the great equalizer.

can't copy a creature with shroud!

it cant copy a creature on the field with shroud if it is already on the field, but if you play it after the shroud, it will be able to copy the shrouded guy (check the rulings if you dont believe me)

but yes, this is the best creature, maybe even better then the best

The comes into play ability doesn't target, so it can copy a creature with shroud using its first ability. However, the change-during-upkeep ability DOES target, so it can't use its second ability to copy a shroud creature. Understand?

This card is why I fell in love with magic. I was the only one in my circle that had one.

If this card copies Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, would it be able to pull off the extra turn effect?

This is my favorate blue card, i like better than counterspell. Great art of one of the best, mister Quinton Hoover. I made a deck with four Dopples and four Clones. It couldn´t do s**t, but man... it was really funny!

Yes, if you use it to copy Emrakul as you cast it you will get the extra turn, but it will die with the original immediately after it hits the battlefield, so you are better off using a Clone for that purpose( 4 mana is better than 5, and the Vesuvi is far too flexible to be wasted like that).

Wrong. It enters the battlefield as a copy of Emrakul, but wasn't cast as it, so its extra turn ability doesn't trigger.

@shinhawk
I'm not sure, but I don't think so. You didn't cast Emrakul, you cast Vesuvan Doppleganger and it entered the field as an Emrakul. I believe that means it only has its normal abilities.

YOU CANNOT COPY EMRAKUL THE AEONS TORN

He has protection from coloured spells, and last time I checked, blue was a colour!! Read the card, people!

The fun thing is to copy something like... clockwork dragon. The vesuvan then enters the battlefield with the six +1/+1 counters. And the next turn you copy a spikeshot goblin for example. The counters will stay on the shifter obviously.

@divine_exodus
YOU CAN MAKE A COPY OF EMRAKUL THE AEONS TORN

The enters the battlefield effect doesn't target and last time I checked protection only prevented damage and targeting!! Read the card divine_exodus!

@divine_exodus: Moreover, not only can you copy Emrakul when playing this card, as that effect does not target (as blurrymadness correctly said), but you can also copy him any turn after that, because Emrakul only has protection from coloured spells, and the doppel is necessarily no longer a spell when using the upkeep ability.

The Doppelganger is not a targeting when it comes into play, only on your upkeep it targets.

9/16/2007: Although Vesuvan Doppelganger's triggered ability is targeted, its "as enters the battlefield" ability is not.

So yes you can cast it to have a "protection from Everything" guy too!

Its "enters the battlefield" ability is identical to Clone but for the extra U in the casting cost, you get the ability to recopy each upkeep anything that it can legally target. No mana costs like Sakashima the Impostor or Vesuvan Shapeshifter. Fabulous card, never got enough credit for being so cool.

Does it trigger come into play abilities whenever it switches targets or only when it is cast?

You may have Vesuvan Doppelganger enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature on the battlefield except it doesn't copy that creature's color and it gains "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may have this creature become a copy of target creature except it doesn't copy that creature's color and it gains "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may have this creature become a copy of target creature except it doesn't copy that creature's color and it gains "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may have this creature become a copy of target creature except it doesn't copy that creature's color and it gains "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may have this creature become a copy of target creature except it doesn't copy that creature's color and it gains "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may have this creature become a copy of target creature except it doesn't copy that creature's color and it gains "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may have this creature become a copy of target creature except it doesn't copy that creature's color""""""

"...and it gains this ability."

Sup dawg, we heard you like copy, so we gave Copy to your copy so that it can copy while it's copying.

If you're saying "tl;dr", it's basically a standard clone except that it stays blue, and at the start of your upkeeps it can clone something else.

While this was an incredibly fun card, Control Magic was almost always better.

If your opponent has the strongest creature in play, stealing it is going to do more for you than copying it.

If you control the strongest creature in play, you're probably already winning and can afford to save your Control Magic as backup in case something goes wrong.

Additionally, creature removal is far more common than enchantment removal. This card is a prime target for creature removal, whereas if someone wastes a removal card on something you swiped with Control Magic, it's a +1 for you. Even if you completely waste something you stole with Control Magic on chump blocking, it's still a one-for-one.

I really want to play this with paradox haze, and maybe Mirror Sigil Sergeant.

Such a fun card to use with illusonary mask What creature did you copy? When did it change?

What if there's an enchantment that gives all your creatures +0/+1 and you choose to NOT copy with it's ability. Would it lose the ability to copy on upkeep? Seems so.

"Like its near cousin, Cryptoplasm, the Vesuvan Doppelganger is an elusive creature by trait. Always finding the best environments to hide in, their mating rituals have yet to be recorded... though speculation has been made on the abundance of Chronozoa near the Doppels' favorite gathering areas. Still... no one knows..."
