cool card..a turn before it comes into play you should be able to play a woolly thoctar...BAM! next turn you'll be attacking with 2 fatties for 10 potential damage...
But the only thing that makes me worry about this card is its toughness.. 3? its still in reach for most burn spells like incinerate, lash out, flame javelin..but its still a nice card.

although it's still got a low toughness, and can be destroyed by anyone's bag of efficient removal, this card just got better with the printing of passed prosperity

For Four mana you too can own your very own 5/3 beatstick, optional features include lifelink if you have kept a white card out this long and haste if you have a red one. And ignore your friends who show you incinerate and laugh, this card is cool!!
actually... a 5/3 with no abilities for 4 is about standard... so the abilities actually put him into the cost effective category, though I'd much rather have haste then life link with him...

Turn 3 Wooly Thoctar, turn 4 Cliffrunner, attack for 10. It's beautiful. The low toughness is unfortunate, but it lowers his mana cost and with some luck you can play him before there are any really threatening blockers on the other side of the table, and if nothing else he should kill his blockers easily enough.

At 4 mana and being one of the only life linkers in the game let alone with haste and not having a lame 1 toughness like giant solifuge, ball lightning, and lightning elemental, got to love this creature. Maybe not the most powerful by a long shot, but it can certainly make its way into a competitive deck. It's 3 toughness is to balance out that your getting a 5 power haste lifelinker for 4 mana, which is the same on rakeclaw gargantuan and it's first strike ability.
After testing this guy out he's really amazing, for starters he's only takes 4 mana and only one of that has to be green. He gets his boosts from anything that has white or red and stays on the field, including equipment cards, artifacts, creatures, or planeswalkers. Can use thoctars, trace of abundance, ajani vengeant and so on to get his abilities working. Sneaking in a hasting 5 power lifelinker is a great way to start a turn 3 or 4. It's still a 5/3 even with nothing else in play. If you think about it like it was a sorcery, and that sorcery read for 4 mana deal 5 damage to opponent or opponents creature and gain 5 life, it puts it in a different perspective. Just insane with stuff like giant growth for lots of life gain (can also use wall of reverence) or behemoth sledge. It's not so much a game ending card, as much as a really solid creature who can bring the beats.

Turn 1: Forest, Birds of Paradise Turn 2: Play trace of abundance on the forest, play Oran-Rief, the Vastwood Turn 3: Play Forest, Tap Forests and Birds to play Cliffrunner Behemoth, tap Vastwood to put a counter on it and swing.
So it is possible to dodge bolts, searing blazes, and stuff like that within reason. You can always negate paths with Vines of Vastwood.
Want to pick up four copies.

Oooh, bolt bait, lightning rod!1
Who cares? 4 toughness would be better, but, oooh, Paaaath still works. And if he had 4 toughness, you'd all type that all day. ANY creature dies to removal of the right kind. Arcbound Ravager isn't good cause Naturalize exists? You people make me sick sometimes.

Cerodon Yearling will help. As for everyone saying this is bolt bait, it's a 4 mana creature. If it gets one attack in before it's killed, you've gained 5 life, done 5 damage or killed a creature, and made them use up a card.

It's not a bad creature by any means. Unfortunately, it just gets overshadowed by everything else. Even in standard - the only format he'd really have a chance in - you're looking at at least Vengevines in the 4 mana spot. You'd definitely be going at least GR or GW if you wanted to play him - in GW alone you'd also be running Fauna Shaman, Knight of the Reliquary, Dauntless Escort, Noble Hierarch, and if you really wanted another creature at 4+ mana you'd probably put in either Ranger of Eos to fuel Vengevine or Thornling. In GR you'd be running Birds, Cunning Sparkmage, Bloodbraid Elf, and again, Thornling would take precedence.
It's a similar case as Serra Angel - by no means a bad card, but it won't ever see constructed play again due to the existence of Baneslayer Angel.

Vengevine makes this guy unplayable? I've got $119 saved that says you're wrong.

Wow this card looks to me like it is very playable, mostly because of haste. lifelink is a nice added extra and easy on the wallet too
@RafiqTheMiststalker
actually arch bound ravanger is good because if they try to naturilize it or use other removal, you can sac artifacts then sac the ravanger to move the counters, there for making none-wrath of god removal almost useless. not to mention the fact that it's the centerpeice of one of the best decks ever made( in my mind).

The three toughness is a major dealbreaker, but if you can cast it with both of its abilities online, it makes for a damn good Ball Lightning variant.

My first foil cards (got a playset on the cheaps when I was quite new.) I love this guy, the artwork is badass, the efficiency is fantastic, he works perfects and incurve with Trace of Abundance for a t3 beater that requires immediate removal. Keep your Vines of Vastwood around for either a massive brutal pump (9 damage + 9 life, an 18 point swing!) or to block that removal in a timely manner.
Works excellent with the Naya-matter 5 power things, like Spearbreaker or similar (the first strike one..)

I use this guy in a deck where I ramp with Trace of Abundance and it's awesome because you can drop him turn three and get those pumps. He's a great way to give yourself some room to build up because of his life link. And if he's removed it's no biggy because he's no win condition or major combo card.

In today's Standard, this would have been strong. Back then Lightning Bolt existed, and if you want to play mid-sized creatures, they need to either have numbers as good as Baneslayer Angel, or gives you cards like Bloodbraid Elf, or both like Wurmcoil Engine.
As I mentioned elsewhere, I believe Lightning Bolt was the card that started all the power creep since it saw print in M10. Because not even a four mana 5/3 haste lifelink could see a little play in its presence, so you'd need to make stronger creatures, and then stronger answers to those creatures. It was a vicious cycle. With the removal of Lightning Bolt from Standard, things are much better now.
