I don't understand why this card has such a high rating. It returns your own Lands to your hand, and for 2 Mana at that? Are there any sick combos or uses I'm missing besides keeping Landfall going?

@gradiusthefox

are you new to magic or something?

first off you can continuesly activate some of the nonbasic zendikar lands,
making a rampaging baloth get +4+4 for 2cmc or with a certain rampaging baloth get a 4-4 creature out every turn without fail for 2cmc!!
i rate 5-5

Hallowed Ground was in the first deck to ever win a Pro Tour.

A better way to enable landfall is probably card draw, in my opinion.
This would be kind of useful against land destruction or enchanting.

@Gradiusthefox:
Land Tax, Balance, Armaggedon.

This card is alright nowadays, but shined early on in magic's lifetime.

Seems a lot worse than Trade Routes. Or I could bring up any Moonfolk and just /thread this.
Gradius presents a good point, this card isn't that good. It's getting a decent rating mostly on nostalgia. Which is fine. But be aware of this fact.

One of the most prominent uses of real-world religious iconography in Magic art.

This art would be BANNED in Yugioh.

@ gradius:

Weathered Wayfarer is a powerful effect. Consistently getting 2 cards a turn, even if one of them is a land, is worth bouncing a land every now and then. Land Tax effects are done sparsely to give us a real appreciation for them. Unfortunately, the loud design of Primeval Titan and friends robs us as players of any sort of appreciation for the subtleties of the way we used to play this game. Hell, Titan even stabbed Realms Uncharted in the back. And that was printed exactly prior to M11!

a single copy would fit nicely in a deck with Armageddon and land tax..

My inner Vorthos is strongly questioning the cross in the artwork, which is otherwise very nice.

This is one of those cards with a lot of subtle uses.

When you first glance at it, it looks like anti-land destruction, and somewhat overpriced and clunky land destruction at that.

Then you realize that it lets you pull back your own land when you cast Armageddon. Or, even worse, Balance. Or Erhnam Djinn. Or to use your Land Tax. Or to get your landfall effects every single turn. Or to take advantage of the new lands with come-into-play effects, or to save a land-creature, or...

This card has a lot of uses. Granted, it's probably a bit too expensive for what it does nowadays (there are ways to bounce your lands without paying regular mana costs -- or you can just use Crucible of Worlds and let them die, which has even more uses), but it was a cool card back in the day.

Most amusing thing about this card: The totally random non-snow restriction. They were really, really terrified that people might actually use the new mechanic they were introducing, I guess, and wanted to make sure that that didn't happen?

You know how religion works, it's ok to have a cross in the art but not a pentagram. If Scientology ever ruled the world you may not even be allowed to have aliens in any game artwork.
