This card + Lure = screw your opponents over

This + Lure + Nacatl-Warpride = Epic Beating

This plus Lure and we have a rare situation in which having vigilance becomes a liability

Tempting Licid is a good one, too. This is by far the best Basilisk. He doesn't do damage, so he gets past protection from green. Pure win.

Even though Tangle Asp may be cheaper, Sylvan Basilisk destroys the moment the opponent declares his/her blockers meaning even first or double strike creatures won't kill this card

The modern Thicket Basilisk...but better, Lure is the obvious combo...

This is probably the single best critter to stick Lure on. It doesn't even have to face down combat damage :P

so are the monsters destroyed before combat?

I have four of these and four Lures in my mono green aggro deck. They form one of my core strategies. Unfortunately when I played against my friends last night, they countered my combo like 4 times which will teach me to play versus blue I guess. Anyway, this card is an absolute must if you want to destroy your opponents and open the way for something like an Ancient Ooze or whatever.

It's a nice card, but for 5 CMC I find it often unplayable. I'd rather have a tangle asp+Dolmen Gate

@Ixi640

Why not have all three?

I can't believe noone's commented on the flavor text yet. I still chuckle every time I see it.

Anyway, for people who are wondering why this is considered better than Thicket Basilisk, notice that Sylvan Basilisk destroys them BEFORE anyone deals damage(Except for Throat Wolf's firstest strike, but he's OP'd anyway). Therefore, only indestructible creatures can truly block him. He's even BOLTPROOF!

I really like the flavor text on this one. Also, this ability feels a bit more "basilisk" like than Deathtouch, since most fantasy basilisks turn folks to stone by looking at them, not by biting or clawing them.

@NARFNra - What's Throat Wolf?

Lure is obvious, of course, but what about Revenge of the Hunted? Board wipe and still swing for 8, along with whatever else you might have out.

@awd91: yes, it destroys all blockers as sooon as they are assigned to block it. It doesn't deal damage to the player since it does become blocked, but it suffers no damage from the blockers as they die before damage is dealt.

It has one achilles' heel: indestructibles. That's why you give him a Sword of Kaldra to wield.

@Ixi640: 5 CMC in GREEN of all things is overcosted to you?

Ultimate combo, After you add your lure to him, add a loxodon warhammer. Now that he has trample you will kill all your opponents creatures and still do damage to him/her while gaining life :) :) I win often do to this combo

A more aggressive variant of deathtouch - either the basilisk is let through to hit the player, or they're losing a creature a turn to the basilisk. See also Engulfing Slagwurm, a 7/7 with an even more powerful effect for only 2 more.
