One of the all-time classically deceptive cards. One has to see it in play before passing any judgement at all on it... GG against weenie decks, as unwieldy as it looks with that (easily-abused, wink wink) discard clause.

Probably the 2nd best creature ever printed, behind Morphling.

And why is this rated so low? People, it's the goddammed Masticore! Come on! It deserves nothing short of a 5 out of 5.

Quite possibly the best artifact creature! If you've got the mana you can mow down their entire army. 5/5.

Morphling is the number one creature ever printed in "Magic." In second place, Masticore. If you built a deck when urza's block was in standard, you put at least 2 of these bad boys in there. The same way everyone used Cursed Scroll. It's colorless so it can go into every deck, and it did when it was in standard.

This creature is so strong that wizard put an upkeep discarding for the set-back to avoid players putting the board full of these beasts. Otherwise, your opponents will be ***ing their pants.

I'm not sure if I can really like Masticore after being single-handedly bulldozed by him so many dozens of times....
So yes, he is almost obscene. Great card.

Umm, hello? Anyone think of Training Grounds? Have this wipe out the entire side of their field for free + free regeneration? Umm, heck yea!!!

i prefer Razormane Masticore for first strike and free 3 damage, but it's very close seeing as this can hit more damage per turn potentially and regen/first strike are both meant to keep the creature alive.
@Edrocks006 training grounds can't reduce to less than {1}. but it's still good combo

Scars of Mirrodin may have a Masticore. MaRo's latest column has some slick new Masticore art, which may be a preview of a new card.
Edit: The art turned out to be for the From The Vault: Relics version of this card.

But there is a new sort of one on the way in Scars. The one catch: it really, really wants you to discard critters :P

Morphling the number one creature in Magic? Hah, that's so last decade. With the obscene power creep from Wizards in the realm of creatures the last couple of years Morphling and Masticore are basically overcosted jank now (okay, and combat damage not on the stack anymore didn't help Morphling either... but it sure isn't even close to the best creature anymore whatever the reason). There's a reason both their prices have plummeted in the last couple of years.

Steep upkeep cost. Thankfully Deep A n alysis combos well with this. Discard the DA, then draw two.
More of a tool to restore board control than a win condition, but he does his job very well. Fits well in any blue control deck with lot's of card drawing.

@Gishra
Morphling has lost its luster due to power creep and rule changes, but Masticore being a colorless 4 for 4/4, as well as a weenie killer that can escape most destruction, is still a powerhouse, far from being a 'overcast jank'.

I feel like I must be missing something here--I can't get past the discard requirement. Maybe in a reanimator deck? I get that it's awesome board control, especially for blue, removes blockers and so on, but the ability seems too mana intensive to be much use outside of really casual games. Am I just underestimating this or isthere some trick I don't get?

I don't think this would be played much, if reprinted today. Yes, it's efficient as heck, but cards need a proper environment to thrive in- just look at Phyrexian Obliterator. From what I understand, this guy gave Draw-Go type of decks a strong creature (Morphling helped, as well.) These days, Draw-Go doesn't really exist anymore and the card disadvantage would probably leave a bad taste in people's mouths. Cards can't really be judged in a vacuum- environment is everything. A card could be absolutely fantastic, but if it doesn't have the proper support, it's just an orphan.
That said, I still think Masticore is awesome. I would probably play him in a deck that took advantage of the discard- Madness or Reanimator.

@Kikke: I just watched someone open a pack of Unlimited Edition on a Youtube video. Alongside cards like Mox Ruby and Sinkhole, the pack included Ironroot Treefolk and Gray Ogre. Creatures back then sucked. I know creatures in Urza's Saga were much better than in Unlimited, but they were still far from overpowering non-creature spells like Dark Ritual and Yawgmoth's Will.
The game is designed to include creature combat. Combat is extremely flavorful and fun, includes very difficult skill-testing decisions, and is filled with opportunities to show off discovered synergies. Not having decent creatures shuts off an important part of the game. In fact, I think it's reasonable to say it's the most important part of the game. The designers and developers today are careful to make both creatures and non-creature spells powerful enough to use.
And now for something completely different... You can include an empty tag in the middle of a word to bypass the censoring. It'll look like this, but with square brackets instead of parentheses: (autocard multiverseid="249365")Deep An(i)(/i)alysis(/autocard). You also have to use the multiverse id instead of the default autocarding because Gatherer wont recognize the word.
