Why doesn't the default link automatically go to the most recent printing of the card?

I don't agree that Magma Spray is better becouse it can only target creatures. it's awesome playing 2-3 of those for extreamly low mana when your opponent got 4-6 life :D

Pretty much entirely dead due to Lightning Bolt. Storms of his youth indeed.

Considering that Lightning bolt predates the existance of Shock, that implies this was dead to begin with.

Take your Sharpie Pen and just write Lightning Bolt across this card.....

@Elysiume

I'm sure there's people who still use this in mono- {R} burn.

only reason why you'd run this in a deck is if you play red with heavy burn and run 4x lightning bolt and 4x shock.

@flzooman
A creature with toughness 0 or less is sacreficed.

In answer to that question, a creature that get's negative counters which are equal to or greater than it toughness is sacrificed immediately. So you can't attack with it. Even if it had a -2/-0 put on it, it would be worthless to attack because a 2/2 would be a 0/2.

Yeah, lightning bolt is standard right now, but who knows if it'll be printed again. It's a moot point to say lightning bolt is better because that doesn't matter. Obviously 3 is greater than 2, you're not really pointing anything out. What matters more is whichever one is standard is helping define the current pace of play.

I think this card is pretty okay. I once killed someone with shock..... Yup that's sad.

How is Magma Spray better than Shock?

With the printing of Burst Lightning, this is no longer even second best in the one mana burn department.

Killing an opponent with shock lets me use all kinds of great puns.

Example: "Hey, Sean! I was playing Matt, and after I attacked with my Ball Lightning, he died from Shock!"

This is definitely still playable - I don't think its useless because of Lightning Bolt. Two damage to anything at instant speed is still very useful. Yes, I'd rather replace this with Lightning Bolt whenever possible, but considering that Lightning Bolts are 2.50 apiece, I personally am not going to pay 10 dollars for a playset of them.

You guys continually yell that Lightning Bolt is better, but why not just throw in four Lightning Bolts AND four Shocks, and be ready for just about everything.

Ahh, poor shock. They even took away your flavor text to show how they hate you.

Despite being replaced by the returned Lightning Bolt, it's a shame to see this rotate out of extended. 4.5/5 for all the use I've got out of Shock.

Ya know as much as most every burn spell ever is better than this, I consider this one the most annoying. Something always ticks me off when someone shocks a creature of mine. A bolt, not so much, but shock.. yeah.

Why the hell did this get reprinted for Duels of the Planeswalkers?

Strictly worse than Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Galvanic Blast... the list goes on and on.

It may not be Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, or Galvanic Blast, but it gets the job done. And that job is owning Snapping Drake.

@ LordAlvon:

You're wrong. Scorching Spear sucks. This murders Storm Crow, and that should forever be the benchmark for burn spells from this moment on.

Ichorix I think Chain Lightning was secant best I mean I would diffidently deck it over this crap...
DacenOctavio this card couldn't take down storm crow in its wildest dreams.

Shock was definitely more appropriate than Lightning Bolt in its milder climate back in the day, but times change, and, in the current Standard environment, Shock just doesn't get the job done anymore. Wizards made a good decision to bring Lightning Bolt back in. Maybe one day, if we have another Mercadian Masques-style mass nerf, poor old Shock can come back into play. As it is now, though, it's time for the card to take a well-deserved retirement and reminisce on all of those mana-harvesting Myr it once killed.

Being reprinted in m12 instead of bolt. 3 toughness creatures rejoice.

Thank you, gods of Magic, for bringing this joyous card back for M12. I'm so tired of hearing about creatures being good because they're "out of Bolt range." 3 toughness creatures, rejoice!

Being reprinted in M12...
The question is, why in the world do they reprint a card that is STRICTLY worse than another card already in standard? Galvanic Blast. (Burst Lightning as well but it rotates out soon.)

I cant imagine a situation where I'd rather use Shock over Galvanic Blast. Most decks run at least 10 artifacts nowadays. (Phyrexian Metamorph, Spellskite, Hex Parasite, Mox Opal, Memnite, Signal Pest, Everflowing Chalice etc.)
Even though the chances of getting out 3 artifacts is low, you have absolutely nothing to lose.

So I ask, why reprint this card?

I've always thought that this art was done for the Ravnica block, and I think that Shock should have been reprinted in Ravnica, because it lacks one simple burn spell...

@LordAlvon: every card you've named is done after the return of Lightning Bolt, and your list end more or less exactly where you've stopped! This card was the standard between Tempest block and 10thEd and in its era it was quite good, even if not used so much because its alternatives were more appealing (for examples: Firebolt, Lightning Helix, Magma Jet, Scent of Cinder, Tarfire, Electrostatic Bolt)...

... now Lightning Bolt takes the entire scene... However I like Burst Lightning and Galvanic Blast more than Lightning Bolt, because they can deal 4 damage, when the game progresses...

I'm quite sad for Shock, but it had his time to shine...! For me, 4/5

Edit:
@Sleazebag: Maybe because they want to slow down a little the power of red burn? When they should have reprinted it, in your opinion? At some time they have to do it... However this is a stample card, it doesn't have to be strictly better than anything. As you pointed out, there are same cards better than this. Some cards have to be worse than the others, like Cancel is strictly worse than a couple of other cards, but it has to exists in order to define the standard curve, and to give a non-biased card to include in core sets. I'm somehow glad they returned to Shock, because Lightning Bolt give some too-easy choice: it was always the first choice in its segment, so it was omnipresent. This is probably the last, that means that there is a little more variety in the red-burn decks... Lightning Bolt is a little boring, under this point of view...
