Every time I see this card I wonder, why is that "if it's in play" clause there?

The "if it's in play" clause is there because if your opponent wants to save his Dark Confidant, he can just Doomblade the yeti and the damage won't be dealt, unlike the effects of Pandemonium.
If they wanted to make this guy good, they would have to take of the sorcery condition on the second ability. That and make it not cost snow.....

@Ritus
The bounce ability needs snow mana to be justified. Red is not a bounce color. By putting snow mana in the ability's cost, the out-of-color ability is justified by the flavor (yetis can hide in snow). And the sorcery limitation is also needed for the flavor of the ability to work.

Arts Much Better Than The Card Wish It Was Playable. But It Kills Biirds And Elves So Not Bad At All In Limited.
Not as good as FTK, but still decent. Got some of these in a red-blue snow deck of mine. Turn two coldsteel heart, turn 3 this yeti, eating up a small creature of theirs.
The bounce ability is at times of use as well. It makes him basically immune to auras like pacifism, and you can also play it prior to mass removal. Not to mention it makes opponents think twice about playing small creatures while this guy is in play.
In another deck, I also had a way of giving him persist. So he came into play, his ability triggered, I gave him persist. He dealt 3 damage to a large creature, he was killed by the creature, persisted back into play, dealt another 2 damage to that creature and got killed again.
Also good, if you have cards in play that continuously pump him, such as glorious anthem, or pump him in response to his ability, like with thriss, nantuko primus, since the yeti can then kill much larger stuff.
Also fun if you have only these yetis in play, and play travelling plague. The plague kills a creature of your opponent, your opponent has to put the plague on the yeti. In your turn you return the yeti back to your hand, allowing you to put the plague back on an opponents creature. That way you can keep killing your opponents creature with the plague (even those who have shroud, can regenerate or are indestructible), without losing anything yourself.

@littlebeast The "if it's in play" clause is there so that when it enters the battlefield, you don't just bounce it in response to its ability triggering. If you could, the yeti would still deal its damage to the target creature (presumably killing it) but it would be in your hand, avoiding any damage back.

Good, but pales in comparison to the extreme power of Flametongue Kavu.

Does anyone know why this hasn't been retemplated to "fight" yet? Cards as far back as Triangle of War have been. It does have a slightly different template than the usual ("it deals damage and that creature deals damage" instead of "deal damage to each other") but there's actually no difference between those templates, right? Or does the other creature not get to damage the yeti if it dies from the yeti's damage?
The fight ability in its infant stages. I really do like that it has a 3/3 body for 4 mana. Coldsnap was a very interesting set, but it didnt have much support being a stand alone set. The best card was Adarkar Valkyrie I still think that the snow subtype was interesting but it didnt function very well outside of the block. The sorcery speed unsummon is a bit restrictive and costs too much. You are basically paying 7 mana to do this in the later game. At that point you dont even have the option of pinging the opponent for Direct damage.

They need to errata the Yeti's ability so that it just states that it fights a creature.
Also; it's somewhat flavorful, but I just can't get into this guy. He fights a guy and unsummons himself- but it's so expensive! I don't see how a repeatable fighting Yeti for 2RR and a snow mana would be so bad. You're already paying out the nose for a lightning bolt with a body.
