Mortify is a fine card, but is a little overshadowed by Unmake on one side and Vindicate on the other. Any time those two options are competing for a slot, I don't really see Mortify getting a look in. Sadly.

Agreed a good card, but if you're running Black/ White Unmake is undoubtedly a better option. I don't always see Vindicate getting the spot over Mortify, but I suppose it depends on who you're versing.

Just to clear this up... Vindicate is MUCH better, maybe the best. However, this is extended-legal. Unmake is more impressive against creatures, but if you don't want to take up deck space with enchantment destruction and need to have some, this is pretty convenient. I'd probably go 1/2 unmake, 1/2 mortify, with the other half sideboarded. It depends on the deck.

I find it strange that this doesn't prevent regeneration, unlike Putrefy.

@mdakw576, yes, that is odd. Although Magic doesn't currently have anything that regenerates enchantments, so it might have been more odd to have enchantment destruction that prevents regeneration. And green has 'prevent regeneration' effects (Whippoorwill, Oxidize), so it's more 'sellable' in that color then in white.

Based on this and Putrefy, it would've been cool to see a whole cycle of these, each destroying a different combination of two types of cards. Such as: Purify (White/Green): Destroy target artifact or enchantment. Petrify (White/Blue): Destroy target creature or counter target instant spell. Liquefy (Blue/Green): Destroy target artifact or counter target creature spell. Then a Gruul spell that destroyed an artifact or land, and a Rakdos spell that destroyed a creature or land. Not sure what the Boros spell would do though.

The instant speed is the only advantage Mortify has over Vindicate. The surprise factor and saving mana for your own turn are both good but if you want cards like Mortify in your deck you obviously want something dead. On that department, Vindicate is far stronger.

would be nice if it prevented regeneration but hey, i'll take it.

@achilleselbow:
I think Rakdos had Wrecking Ball. The cost is {1} at {2}{B}{R}, but it's the creature/land effect you are describing.
I do agree, though; a cycle of these would have been pretty awesome. Though "Petrify" I think would be 'counter target noncreature spell' to complement "Liquify"'s 'counter target creature spell'.
Also, the destroy target artifact or enchantment would be nullified almost instantly outside of block play, since there's Naturalize and Pacifism. Possibly a "Remove from Game" variant?
Just some thoughts. I really like the card, though. Excellent removal for an in-block deck. Vindicate might be better in a broad sense, but this did rather well in my Orzhov deck.

I think this doesn't prevent regeneration because as with Artifacts and Creatures, they are more commonly regenerated, or have abilities or other cards that regenerate them (eg. Welding Jar). While obviously as stated above, creatures are regenerated a lot, you just don't see Enchantment regeneration very often. It actually sounds really weird to me, at least lol. Maybe it's the flavor thing of it. That's my guess.

Using four of these as removal until I can get some money for a playset of Swords to Plowshares.
Great card and I love the multifunction. 5/5

Vindicate is not an instant. That's a good reason to consider this for your deck rather than vindicate. The other reason? Vindicates cost money.
Cool ideas. Rakdos has Wrecking Ball (creature/land), while Gruul has Wreak Havoc (Artifact/Land). Dimir also has Consult the Necrosages, which is their modal spell.
This is how I'd do it: Ravnica: U/B: Vilify: Counter target non-creature spell, or destroy target creature. W/G: Sanctify: Destroy target enchantment or artifact. (Or Exile, as Disenchant is strictly better) W/R: Purify: Destroy target enchantment or destroy target land. Can't be countered. B/G: Putrify, as written
Guildpact: R/G: Petrify (aka Wreak Havoc): Artifact or Land, can't be countered. B/W: Mortify, as written. U/R: Falsify: Counter target non-creature spell, or destroy target artifact. Can't be countered.
Dissension: B/R: Vitrify (as Wrecking Ball), can't be regenerated. U/W: Rectify: Counter target non-creature spell or destroy target enchantment. U/G: Liquefy: Counter target creature or artifact spell.

There already is such a cycle in Ravnica block. Wreak Havoc and Wrecking Ball usually get overlooked because they're not nearly as powerful as the other two.

I actually prefer this card to it's brother putrefy since most of the scary artifacts I'll want to destroy are usually going to be creatures and stapled enchantment removal is hard to find,
