A powerful and versatile card that is not to be underestimated. Not only does it kill regenerators, but also gives black decks the ability to deal with artifacts, which is rare in black decks, and gives green direct creature kill, which is rare in green.

Well it's a gold card not a hybrid, meaning you can't add Creature kill to a pure green deck, you would of had to of had both of the types of mana already. Regardless a good card which definitely beats Terror if you're running black-green.

Powerful and versatile, as stated. Also serves as a supremely elegant example of good multicolor design, together with it's brother card, Mortify.
What black lacked in regards of artifact destruction, green lacked in creature kill. An obvious design space for a cool multicolor instant, and one of those reasons why Ravnica rocked hard.

Very solid destruction spell.

Maelstrom Pulse is better, but costly to get a playset.

Great card. Simply kill any creature, or artifact. Even Mortivore dies to this beast of a card. I am trying to get four in my G/B spirit deck because it lacks creature kill other than two Hexs.

Instant speed DOES make a difference in most cases. Takes care of the tarmogoyf AND the jitte--that cannot be bad in my book.

Maelstrom Pulse isn't always better then this card. For one, this is an instant and it stops creatures from regenerating. Even though MP is generally better, this is still a really good card that helps a ton with removal in g/b decks. Basically I'm saying use both this and Maelstrom, and you'll make your opponent very sad.
Maelstrom Pulse isn't better. This spell is instant, which means you can cast it on opponent's turn to save you mana on your turn. It can kill land-creature as they transform or flash creature right as they come into battlefield. This card prevents regeneration also.
If you see Masticore in play, do you want Maelstrom Pulse or Putrefy?

They should have reprinted this in M11 to deal with Gaea's Revenge.
Also, you CAN easily play it in a pure green deck, considering how many monogreen cards there are that make mana of any color.

5/5, hands down. In some instances, better than Maelstrom Pulse even.

@achilleselbow: If you put this in an all-green deck, it's no longer an all-green deck.
sucks how the simic were the only enemy-colour guild that didn't get a really cool uncommon instant

Not as versatile as Vindicate, but faster (Instant vs. Sorcery) and more useful for the scope its limited to. Kills any creature dead, completely dead with no risk of regeneration, and does the same for the few non-creature artifacts out there which regenerate. Plus, it's artifact removal in black, which is somewhat rare. To top it all off, it gives B/G decks their own version of Terminate. I dig it.

@achilleselbow I'm pretty sure you can't target Gaea's Revenge with this card because it also has B in the cost, which makes it black as well as green. There's always Prey Upon these days ;)

@ Purple Shrimp- Maybe you don't consider it "cool", but Cytoshape is the Simic card in this cycle. It's nowhere near as destructive as this magnificent spell, but it can easily function as an instant kill spell using 0/0 Simic Graft creatures (ie- Simic Basilisk), or as a major pump for said creatures if you need it.
I love every spell in the cycle, but Putrefy is almost always the most powerful. 5/5

@everybody: Trygon Predator is the Simic card that complete the cycle. And not every card of the cycle were instant/sorcery: Watchwolf, for example!
It's quite far from bad, but this better, I think... Versatile, fast and powerful! 5/5

This and MP definately best black green destroy cards. Instant makes a big difference, I run this, and Executioner's capsule as my 8 kill cards in a glissa recycle deck, unless its against black or red, then i sub in witchbane or tragic slip or something. Awesome card
@Appleseed: actually, this can target Gaea's Revenge, as it's still a green card.
@everyone: I don't think there is a cycle. There is this and Mortify, which are a cute little pair of black and its enemy colors together making a destruction spell neither could alone, and there are a bunch of random cards people try to put together solely because they're in Ravnica block and may have the potential to destroy something. And seriously, Watchwolf?

Awesome removal, but I prefer Maelstrom Pulse because it's can target more cards, even if it's a sorcery.
With Abrupt Decay from RtR, Green and Black decks have a nice toolbox of Removal.

In Modern I generally like this card better than Maelstrom Pulse. I generally find that killing man lands to be more important than killing enchantments or planeswalkers (which can be attacked anyway).
The instant speed also makes a huge difference, allowing it to answer swords that are played and equipped on the same turn, where Maelstrom Pulse can't.
