how does this get a better score than freaking land tax? not saying this is a bad card, but come on, land tax does everything this can but better.

To mdakw576: I disagree with you. Land Tax is good, sure, but it's awfully vulnerable to removal. With this, you're more likely to pull it off. Also, Gift of Estates, unlike Land Tax, doesn't need to be cast during the upkeep, making way for some combo elements that Land Tax would never be able to pull off.

Land Tax is also Banned in Legacy. I agree that this is more likely to get pulled off and ontop of that, it spells card advantage.. 1 for 3, sounds good to me.

"has" more lands? How did that wording make it into ninth edition

"Here, I got you some Magic cards!" "...why is this box full of Mountains?" "No reason."

Also remember that it's Plains, not basics. So unlike Land Tax, you can fetch Shocklands and such.

While not better or worse than Land Tax, it is much easier to activate most of the time.
Usually easier to use a Tithe due to instant speed, and that it's not dead late game (still grabs you a plains.) Still, this is a 3-for-1 that if you can get off on T2 or T3 guarantees you'll make it to the late game. Next turn you'll be Wrath of Goding if things didnt' go well, and the turn after you jump into fat territory. Baneslayer, Sun Titan, you name it.
The advantage of Land Tax was you could avoid dropping the land to thin you deck and keep your hand full for cards like Ivory Tower. This card is good for getting non-basic plains. So with the exception of Mistveil Plains both cards can get the mana type that you need either with basic land or dual/shock land. That is if you don't Magical Hack to get the other Shadowmoor lands, Murmuring Bosk , or Dryad Arbor. If given the option between the two cards I believe most people would always pick tax or gift.

You mean Scrubland, not Karakas.
