Would be incredibly ridiculous for , very powerful for , and still worth using for or But for while still having a tiny 1/1 body, i'm not too content with this card. On the other hand, it might be interesting in a burn deck since you are rather able to manage keeping your opponent's side empty until this guy enters the field. On top of that, he also just needs to deal any damage, not combat damage only, making it useful with cards like Fire Whip or Viridian Longbow.

Casting cost kills it, if it was even one CC less it would be infinitely better
Mana Barbs would be fun with this, maybe a stormed up Grapeshot, for double power hits.

Can these flip-guys be used in EDH as a general if they don't start legendary?

Blech, I love Kamigawa but seriously, just use Furnace of Rath.

Before there were Level Up cards... there were flip cards!
Lavarunner is certainly fragile in his natural state, but if you get him flipped then he becomes an interesting enabler. Comparing him to Furnace of Rath is a bit misleading - he is much closer to Sulfuric Vapors, except that he will include all red sources, rather than simply spells. If you want to make the most out of his ability, then, you're looking for cards that deal 1 damage to one or more players, since this little guy will be effectively doubling that without carrying as much of the inherent risk of the Furnace (to its caster). Some examples:
Remember - this will only enhance damage to players. It won't let Goblin Sharpshooter machine-gun 2/2s; it won't help you kill that Jace either. Build accordingly! =)

The problem is his unflipped side is so trashy it makes Raging Goblin look amazing. That....just sucks.
I could see it starting out as a 1 drop though, with a different flip trigger- 'whenever a creature dealt combat damage by (This Guy) dies, flip him.'
He'd be a Raging Goblin most of the time, but a LEGENDARY Raging Goblin! Come On! =D

Overcosted card is overcosted. Four mana for a 1/1 with haste?

Also, run him with Pandemonium. Or a Furystoke Giant.
