That's an exceptionally awesome dragon. All you have to do is tap 5 of their lands and they basically skip their next two turns, or you can tap down a creature or two and still most of their non basic lands. Reminds me of sleep, but built into a creature.

Yosei is an amazing card. 4WW for a 5/5 flying is pretty bad but the ability devastates your oppents next turn. Very good card

It comes as no surprise to me that Mori's deack was so powerful in 2005 when he ran this dragon with Greater Good.
Sacrificing Yosei to draw 5 cards then discard 3 during the opponent's upkeep, thereby shutting down that turn AND preventing the next turn's untap, was just such a powerful combo that few could recover.
Also, Yosei was the most prominently featured Dragon in the Kamigawa novels, so that is a plus for players like me who love the flavor and feel of the game.

I remember playing a Chord of Calling / Ghostway deck with tons of one-ofs, and thinking about a way to beat Yoseis since they tapped me out for too long. I beat the tournaments a few times after I found the solution in two Clones.
Kamigawa - Ravnica remains the best Standard I had to date.

Time for a design story!
As Aaron Forsythe recounts (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/af38); the spirit dragon cycle were costed according to how typical it was for dragons to show up in those colors. So red and blue were the most splashable, Yosei and Cocopuffs less so, and Jugan the least so.
The result is at the beginning of your upkeep you sacrifice old Yosei to Doomgape at the beginning of upkeep, then let Sheoldred, Whispering One return it with little fuss. All the while tapping things. And NO UNTAP STEPS either!
Great reason to play B/W/G, and 5/5 from me :D

Extremely good with Miren, the Moaning Well. Though also far better in an era when one could stack damage. Still, I can see Yosei as part of a game-winning Birthing Pod combination in Modern.
@DarthParallax No, I can say with absolute certainty that no thought was given to the Spirit Avatars and Dragon Spirits when they were designing Diregraf Captain.
There may have been a passing thought during Drogskol Captain's design, however.

Apparently Spirit Avatars and Dragon Spirits are Spirits....did Wizards think about these cycles when they made Diregraf Captain? o.O

Kokusho's good, but in two-player matches Yosei probably hurts the hardest of all the Spirit Dragons. I mean look at that. Look at that.

Take one part this thing, one part Doomgape and a pinch Sheoldred, Whispering One or Debtors' Knell

Play it the turn after Angel of Flight Alabaster.
