Why is this only rated 3?
This is either a +1/+1 until end of turn for your fatty late game, or 1 damage to opponent late game, all for 1cc.

4/5 because spirit is irrelevant outside kamigawa block.
Also, it doesn't die to doomblade, or any removal/bounce/etc ever. They can't respond to it's sac ability because by the time that ability is on the stack, the creature is already in the graveyard.

no it doesn't die to doomblade. in response, you sac it so it dies to itself. it dies to itself

Horsemanship must be trolling. It's not in color, but a comparison of a similar mechanic better executed is Mogg Fanatic or Fume Spitter. If this guy gave +2/+2 or +1/+1 and trample, that'd be awesome; then he'd be 5/5 material as those are powerful effects, especially on a mini-beater for {G}.
But this..? {G} really has better options

Actually forms a cycle with Mogg Fanatic, Blood Pet, Hapless Researcher, and Benevolent Bodyguard, I think. MaRo confirmed the others were a cycle in this article http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr41 and Child of Thorns seems the most likely suspect for the final part of it he speculated would get printed at some point.

Situationaly, this can be better than other highly comparable cards like Mogg Fanatic and Fume Spitter.
Mogg Fanatic: Can help you get that extra point in combat to finish off an enemy creature. Can help you deal an extra point of damage to the enemy player. Does not help protect your creature from dying in combat (unless yours has first strike, or the enemy creature has only 1 toughness). Does not help protect an important creature outside of combat. Can help by being used to ping off small enemy creatures.
Fume Spitter: Can help you get that extra point of damage in combat to finish off an enemy creature. Does not help you deal an extra point of damage to the enemy player. Can help protect your creature from dying in combat (because the enemy creature also receives decreased power, as well as toughness). Does not help protect an important creature outside of combat. Can help by being used to ping off small enemy creatures.
Child of Thorns: Can help you get that extra point of damage in combat to finish off an enemy creature. Can help you deal an extra point of damage to the enemy player (in a limited but very flavor-fully green way!). Can help protect your creature from dying in combat. Can help protect an important creature outside of combat. Does not help by being used to ping off small enemy creatures.
If I could make this into a chart, I would. Personally, I think this is a rather solid one drop. I think he deserves somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars.
