Hand it across to a opponent, watch them lose 4 life each turn if they don't have anythin.

This is actually pretty good. Artifact creatures are often not as efficient as regular creatures, and fliers almost never are. The drawback is actually pretty positive if you're running Skullclamp (and who isn't?) or modular. Just needs to be played right.

needs moar "trample 7/7 deal damage to each opponent equal to the sacrificed creatures power" to get away with this ability imo.
can i sacrifice a rust elemental to another rust elemental?

@ Kenny: Yes you can, when a card refers to a card by name (in this case, Rusted Elemental) then it only counts for that said card, and not another copy of that said card. So in this case, you cannot sacrifice THIS "Rusted Elemental" but if you happened to have another, you can Sacrifice that one. ----------- Modular and Wellspring cards from the NEW Mirridon packs. Anything that LIKES to die as an artifact would be good with this deck, just gatta know how to play it. The same thing can be said about Rusted Slasher (, 4/1 - regenerate by sacrificing a Artifact). I honestly think I will make a Rust deck focusing on Destorying Artifacts and Reeping the Benifits of such... now if only their were more rust cards :(
I'm just a big fat sack of rust, dont mind me. Ohh and while you're here go get me a dozen of those crispy little ornithopers becasue I'm getting hungry and you know that I don't like to get hungry...

Rust doesn't shine, silly!
:P But yeah you do have a point, it does work great in a (casual) modular deck. I remember playing against a slightly altered variant of the Darksteel Theme Deck Transference in my early days of Magic. I got beaten from it several times because my opponent always had enough Arcbound creatures to feed it, which made it considerably big on its first attack and up to three times as big later on. I had genuine respect from it.
But of course that's not a reliable yet very risky win condition. It continually demands permanents, is prone to removal, and hits you instead if you don't have any. So the junk rating (hah!) for this rusty old thing does seem justified.
I wouldn't consider it a 1.5 though. More of a 2.5 in my book. But it could have been more. A cost of would have made it pretty interesting.
The oldschool punishment à la Yawgmoth Demon or Minion of Leshrac has great flavor in general. There's something to the dispbedient "You summoned me, so you owe me. I won't serve you and hit you instead if you deny me my offering."
However, the more common apprach that you'd have to sacrifice itself would seem far more fitting for something made out of rust that needs new metal to sustain itself. In fact, this might have been the single best choice to get the "do your job each upkeep or else I will die" wording. The crude and stout artwork of it do work in favor of its actual wording, though.
