Awesome with ninjas and Riptide Laboratory.

The point of shadow is to attack unblocked, or to block other shadow creatures, which aren't that numerous. I card drawing ability is too situational and not immediately useful. I'd rather this creature be a 2/2 or something. 2.5/5

Its two abilities don't have to be entirely synergistic. It can function as a steady pinger or serve as Voidmage prodigy fodder.

Perfect fodder for Ninjitsu.

I'll show you how to take away the "too situational" problem. Combine four of these guys with Teferi's Veil. They leave play after every combat. They deal their one damage and let you draw a card! I was running that combo alongside some flying Ophidians. Sometimes I'd be up to drawing 7 cards per turn.

Based on my success with these guys, 5/5.

EDIT: Apparently the phasing rules have since changed.

"702.23d The phasing event doesn't actually cause a permanent to change zones or control, even though it's treated as though it's not on the battlefield and not under its controller's control while it's phased out. Zone-change triggers don't trigger when a permanent phases in or out. Counters remain on a permanent while it's phased out. Effects that check a phased-in permanent's history won't treat the phasing event as having caused the permanent to leave or enter the battlefield or its controller's control."

Since zone-change triggers don't trigger when a permanent phases out, this fun combo no longer works. :'(

2 for 1/1 shadow is not a bad card.
It also nets you a card when it leaves the play.
One combo I can think of right now is with Peel from Reality

This guy loves all ninjas, but for me, the most fun is Ninja of the Deep Hours. 2 cards and a shock to the enemy's face for 1U? Yes please.

It likes to die, so play it where it is guaranteed to die: EDH. So many Wraths, you'll always draw the card :)

This guy loves Voidmage Prodigy, and Voidmage Prodigy loves him. And you know what...I love them both.

A cheap leaves play draw a card effect is a potent thing to have around in a lot of decks, consider that it adds cantrip to many spells such as Devastation Tide or regular board wipes, and if you have a way to recur the bounce and nothing else to do you can just bounce him at the end of your opponent's turn for a card.

Very usable. "Champion" him.
