Zyant, not really. Mycoloth doesn't require you to pay mana to get your saps out, but if you want those 20 pentavites, you're going to need mana.

Beautiful art and a great effect with doubling season, if you don't tlike the cost feel free to run tetravus and wait, as for me, I'l tap my cloudposts proudly and when I run out feed the scraps to arcbound ravager or mycoloth
If i get this guy out, then everyone in an 8 way chaos has ot team up on me to have hope of getting him out of the way, and then they get screwed over by his after effects.
5/5, I'd rather give a vital organ than a copy of this card.

It's better when paired with Doubling Season if you also bring out a Krark-Clan Ironworks. Also abusable with Blade of the Bloodchief, considering you sacrifice the tokens to put them back on the Pentavus, even without the Vampire creature type.

Even better than Mycoloth when paired with Doubling season Turn 1 that you play Pentavus - 10 counters turn 2 - remove 10 counters and 20 pentavites spawn rinse and repeat ---- Or, you know, you could remove five counters for ten Pentavites, sac five Pentavites for ten counters, and you've got 10 1/1s and a 15/15. And that's just ONE Doubling Season.

I hate playing against this card, it's so ridiculously annoying. 5/5

@Zyant and Exuberance: He comes into play with the counters already on him, therefore Doubling Season won't effect the initial amount on him. He can only start with 5.

A 5/5 for ? Not so good. 5 1/1 fliers for ? Still not so great. BUT, if you have any kind of CIP/ETB or PIG/LTB triggers out (Disciple of the Vault or Arcbound Crusher anyone?) this guy becomes an engine of destruction very quickly.
Doubling Season affects cards that "enter the battlefield with" a certain number of counters. Triskelion, for example, would enter the battlefield with six +1/+1 counters on it rather than three.

Apparently Wizards agrees. Pentavus is being reprinted in M12.

@Xylek: If you took three seconds to click on Doubling Season and look at its rulings, you'd know how wrong you are.

If I didn't know any better I could almost swear that they based Ghave, Guru of Spores on this card, or perhaps the mechanics are just identical by chance.
