This is probably the inspiration for the Herald cycle in Shards of Alara.

lmao I can't tell who AlphaNumerical was directing his comment at This card is absolutely fantastic, I'd rather draw him than the actual scion. Not only that but Scion of Darkness will bring back what you sac'd... best part scion isn't legendary you bring back Dark Supplicant and repeat. In-freaking-sane.

He is an awesome fellow, and does an especially great job in a Cleric deck, allowing a Scion of Darkness already in turn 2 if things work out nicely, and later on if you sacrifice your clerics with a Rotlung Reanimator in play you won't regret it either. This guy makes Cleric decks more competitive.
And i think Etregan is right, the Herald cycle from Shards of Alara was likely inspired by this card. Unfortunately though, as opposed to this goodie, these are pretty useless and boring. The Heralds do not only require three mana to activate their ability, they need two other creatures of different colors to sacrifice - which is pretty hard to manage, and are even only able to find the card if it's in your library. I normally like such cards which are able to fetch other cards with a certain name, but the Herald cycle was a poor unplayable cycle of pitious uncommons...may this never happen again.
JL_Weber: I'm pretty sure AlphaNumerical was referring to Crabby since his comment is the sole purpose of having Dark Supplicant's in a cleric deck. lmao. And Mode couldn't have put it better!

Scion of Darkness will not bring back what you sac (these guys), unless you can somehow find a way to have it deal combat damage to yourself.
turn 2 Scion of Darkness is pretty much game. And not that terribly unlikely in a cleric deck.

@RedAtrocitus: thank you, Captain Obvious! We could never have figured it out without you!

Conspiracy for Clerics makes this guy a lot better: you can throw around cheap tokens and crack them instead (of note: Sengir Autocrat turn 4). This both prevents the card disadvantage issue to a degree and makes it easier to find additional Scions. Don't forget that he can find Scion from the 'yard, so rev up those Nuisance Engines!

For some reason, the "search your hand" part is way too funny to me.
"Ummm... let's see here... no... no... ummm... oh, here it is!"
"Lucky thing you only have 2 cards in your hand...."

If you respond to this ability by destroying the dark supplicant do they still lose their clerics and get no scion?

The obvious cycling synergy is pretty nice. If you don't mind card disadvantage (and you probably don't if you're running this..)
consider dropping the dragon shadow, dragon wings and especially dragon breath into the graveyard. Doing all this with a Putrid imp will require a *very* admirable hand but will allow you to pound early. That said, he's not as good until they have something worth reanimating!

Consider running this guy in {B}{U} with artificial evolution. If you name Spirits then it's easy to run Nether Shadow, Nether Traitor, and Bloodghast to get repeatable Scions no matter what your opponent does!
