Strangely, morph went over my head when it came out. By that stage I was still a novice at magic (I must ahve been about 12 or so) and, as far as I was concerned, I just wanted green/red decks that would smash my opponent to death. I had no real interest in combos or sneakiness and I just disliked the morp mechanic.

It was only some expansions later when I pulled an Ixidron from a booster that I began to look at all my morph cards again. By that stage I was becoming more interested alternatives to the direct approach of smashing your opponent down to 0 quickly. In a morph deck, very cheap morphs are useful so the Liege gets a point for having a morph cost cheaper then it's casting cost. I cans ee the idea with him: you attack them with a 2/2 and then unmorph him to have a blocker with vigilance ready for the next turn. I think if printed today he might have had a higher toughness.

He's not terrible, but there are more effective morphers. Sorry Liege of the Axe, I do not think I'll be using you anytime soon.

A fairly strong card. While its casting cost is a bit high, as a morph creature it's a nice combat trick. For only two mana it's a surprise 2/3 blocker, which is decent, especially since it was in the block when morph was a major mechanic, so it was able to eat a lot of attacking creatures. Add the fact that it becomes vigilant when morphed, and you've got a good limited card.

Ugh, such great art and such a bad-ass name, shame it's not so hot in action.

Nice combat trick for limited- take out a 2/2 and surprise your opponent. Not so great for casual or constructed, though...

The art is so badass but the card so "Only Good In Limited"....
