I may be reading this card wrong, but it seems the only way to lose defender on this card...is when it is attacked. This seems to defeat the purpose of losing defender and gaining trample. Can anyone help me out?

The change is permanent. Defender isn't there to defend, it's to prevent it from attacking.

This is a colorless, rare, shitty version of Duskdale Wurm.

Oddly reminiscent of Elder Land Wurm.

Am I the only one who feels a compulsive need to get a Giant Soldier of Stone alter for this?

In multiplayer his flavor text actually reads "go somewhere else"

I really like this guy, and he did help me out a lot in the prerlease tournament here. I can't see myself ever using him outside of sealed play though. He just isn't good enough. As someone said he is pretty much a color worse version of duskdale wurm. To make it worse they reprinted Garruk's Horde, I can get this for 7 mana or I can get a creature that starts out with trample, doesn't ever have defender, and lets me play creatures from the top of my deck whenever I want. Give him first strike, make him an 8/8 or better, make it cost less mana. As is it is a cool concept, even if it isn't the first time we have seen it, but it is just too bad to see play.

This does give your opponent decisions and allows them to play around this easy by waiting for an evasive threat to end the game, but he's still a huge creature for any deck and works well when flashed in by Savage Summoning.

It's an interesting card, but its only real use is in Limited.

I actually came on gatherer to see if the in***ion related to a previous card, the way Akroma's memorial does.

So this is just plain *** afterall uh..

7 mana for a 7/7 with trample...common? NO, RARE!... but it's colouless, so I guess it's okay for limited NO, DRAWBACK!!??? Jesus Christ, 5 troll cards in one set, 2 of them rare, good job on ruining your booster sale wizards.

This should have costed a lot less mana. I think at 5 it would be interesting. As is, marmaris74 is exactly correct - it's terrible.

EDIT
@Purplerooster
Flashing this guy in won't work. His ability only triggers when the creatures declare to attack. Flashing him in after will allow you to block, but he will still be a defender. Flashing him in before will just make them not attack which is basically the same as playing him on your turn without flash.

@NoobOfLore
Yes. This guy is colourless so he is not just a crappier version of duskdale wurm. However, they could have made this guy much more interesting. Drawbacks should be worth more than just 2 mana symbols changing to colourless.

Seems kinda disappointing.... A 7/7 trample for 7 has been on curve for a while, and this one has a drawback. I feel like they could have done some more with this that would have made it more interesting, though I guess it works well flavorwise.

A reason you might play this guy is he is the biggest creature around apart from Street Sweeper that can become completely free because of Rakdos, Lord of Riots ability. Apart from that it has cool art and does a decent job of holding down the fort even if that is just by preventing creatures from attacking you.

What a trash rare... let's compare to Terra Stomper. Okay I know Stomper is green but even so...

When this comes out, people can just choose not to attack you until they can deal with it. It doesn't have any huge advantages to playing it and at 7 mana, there are so many better options that this will never see constructed play and only fringe play in casual. Even in limited, people will hesitate on picking this despite it's size. Pathetic excuse for a rare.

@Nooboflore: Really? It's always been that way? Tell that to Wurmcoil Engine.

Epic art. Good card but not busted. If they aren't attacking you in multiplayer that could give you the time you need to assemble your plan. Yes there are better cards. The art makes me think of the statues in LOTR. I think this card should have had an extra ability like as long as it has defender it can block 2 creatures! Why doesn't it have Reach?! Combos with Maul Splicer

This is not a bad card, no, but it is less powerful than the seven drops any color has access to, and more importantly, its a really disappointing rare. I just opened one in my first pack of M14, that was disheartening. Back to buying individual cards for a while. :P

Big stompy things with drawbacks like thisused to be pretty common rares, but you just don't see it that much lately without being very undercosted, so this guy feels a bit out of place. Maybe he can be a good finisher in an artifact deck?

It seems this set is full of them - cards with the potential to be loads of fun, but end up being junk rares. There are so many possible tweaks that would have made this card enjoyable to open instead of just completely disheartening, why, Development, why?!?!?

(I like Tower Defender's idea of adding either 'reach' or 'can block an additional creature' - either of those would have made it just right at 7 mana).

In a breathtaking turn of events, losing GreenGreen from the cost of a creature makes it less powerful!
Don't whine about artifact creatures being less obviously excellent than green creatures, that's how the game has *always* worked. I like this card, myself. Sometimes mind games are worth more than "strict" advantage, especially when it comes to multiplayer politics. Now, the card could have been a little bit fancier, but it's cool and fun as it is.

@lifegainwithbite: Wurmcoil engine is one of the most ridiculously stupid cards ever printed. Not every card should be Baneslayer Angel or Wurmcoil Engine. Baneslayer Angel and Wurmcoil engine shouldn't even even be themselves.

@SAUS3: Card power varies, and the rarity of cards is based on more than just pure power level. If power levels/mana were always uniform, the game, and limited in particular, would be incredibly boring.

It'd be okay in a draft or limited. Colossus of Akros offer so much more for one more mana.

I don't know why this is rated so low. In essence it's a 7 7/7 with trample. All they have to do is declare a single attacker. People will attack you eventually, if not the turn after you summon it, just think of it as extended summoning sickness.

I will agree that it would be better and fair as a 6, and it is pretty ridiculous as a rare, but it's at least a 3/5.

If this got another evergreen after being attacked, I don't think that would be too overly broken. Like Vigilance or even Flying.

Also, we should also not forget that this combos hilariously with the Splicers
