Quick! There's not enough equipment in this set, throw in a super bland one! Though honestly, even the bland aspects of design need to be explored. And the flavor is still good.

the art is sweet, the card is unfathomably dull.

Odd. Card is awfully generic, and "riot gear" gives you higher toughness than power? I admit that the flavor text alludes to self defense, but there are SPIKES on the gear in the art.

Why does this exist? Did we just need more common equipment or something?

just good in limited. terrible everywhere else.
compare to civic saber. in this block, bland equipments roam free

I'm not even sure this is good in limited. At 1 to equip, sure, but 2? Nooooo. :C

And Wizards said, "Since this isn't the plane of metalworkers, artifacts and blacksmiths, let's just make it just slightly worse than Vulshok Morningstar", and there was mediocrity.

The most generic artifact equipment in the world!

Missed opportunity. This could have been a counterpart to Trusty Machete, and thus much better.

I agree w/Tiggurix...this really should have cost 1 to drop, 2 to equip.

well yeah, this is lame... but during limited, if I get a high priest of penance, this will be on him, lickity-split

then the chump-blocking will commence, as well as fighting, as well as plinking

Good on any 1-toughness creature. Well, not "good", per say, but not bad.

For those of you that don't think hexproof is worth an extra mana.

A card named riot gear could have been so much better.

@Ferlord I wouldn't call cutting the power boost by half "just slightly worse", though. I'd go with what Tiggurix said:

"Missed opportunity. This could have been a counterpart to Trusty Machete, and thus much better."

Compare to Manriki-Gusari or Trusty Machete. Oh well, it's a bad card, but, I just imagine someone making a sweet altered art version with a police officer in riot gear. Honestly, that's the only thing this card has going for it aside from barely making every limited deck (don't play this in cube).

"Gentlemen! I have a plan!"
"Okay, I'm listening..."
"We shall make a crappier version of Vulshok Morningstar!"
"...Who are you and how did you get into our development meeting?"

Vulshock Morningstar was so backbreakingly good. This is perfectly fair. I'd play one in any creature-based draft deck for sure.

this loxodon clearly lost it, got a brain of a goblin. traded a longsword for a shiny heavy arm guard. what a poor card.

You could make someone believe this is Illusionist's Bracers... If that someone would be very, very drunk.

Take Leonin Scimitar, add +0/+1... makes it cost 1 more and 1 more to equip. Not to mention the whole losing +1/+0 off Vulshock Morningstar... This really is one of those few cards where you really wonder what they were thinking when they made it.
