Mass artifact removal in green? This isn't bad and it's cheaper to play than shatterstorm. Monogreen, and golgari decks should appreciate this card. Considering it's effect in this color, with it's drawback it's a solid 3.5 star card.
I just really like this card and find in a better representation of the kind of Magic I like to play than its descendent Creeping Corrosion. It's not that I like drawbacks in general (otherwise I might not like modern cards) just this one.
Not the greatest against a dedicated affinity deck, but it's at least still a cheap, useable option.
It's in EDH that this could really be useful. Especially against those players who can have three or four mana rocks already on the board by turn 3 or 4. I'd gladly kill those for three mana and 5 or 6ish life. Likewise, I won't mind if an opponent is gaining something like 10 or even 20 life if it's getting rid of multiple problematic artifacts. Many decks won't really mind that drawback - either they'll be winning by other means (like commander/general damage) or when their alpha strike comes it's so overwhelming that the extra life makes no difference.

When I just killed 10 cards for 3 mana, who cares if they gain a bunch of life?
Unless I am facing an artifact deck that can win before 4 lands, I would probably go with creeping corrosion though.
