Hmm... BlackBlack3 to kill one elf! Not worth it at all!!! Still prefer Icy Manipulator + Royal Assassin over this useless card.

I actually like this card and have played it quite a lot. It's not a good card but fun. It might be useful with Sinister Strength.

only if this didnt have to tap! its not great, and i've almost never used it, but paried with newer enchanments like beastmasters ascention, its not bad. then it would be a 6/6. But as a 1/1 its not great unless your opponet has one awsome blocker that you need to tap.

Hey, according to the mtg wiki this was a staple of black decks of the time.

Chalk this up to a typo!

Taps down the creature making it unavailable to attack or use its tap abilities, and has the added benefit of killing creatures with 1 toughness or more if you have some way to boost his power.

uh... Basilisk Collar ?
seriously - this is a pinger, in Black!
sure, it costs more than a prodigal, and has a cost to activate... but how many of these kind of guys can you find?

So... unless you pump its power, it's a black Stun Sniper that's twice as expensive.

At best a mediocre way of dealing damage with a creature. Only useful if also connected with death touch, however there are a lot of better creatures for that ability.

It's redeeming characteristic is that it taps the creature it targets. 3/5. I think it is more useful than it is given credit for. and yes it was a staple of black decks of the time, it actually rocked.

A pumpable Stabbing Pain on a stick? = 3.5/5

Endless Scream can have this guy putting a hurt on other people's creatures, but a solution for him is still a ping away. Seems expensive, but this was from when Dark Ritual ruled the world.

Versatile creature though - can be used as a pinger, a control creature or both.

Is Abyssal Hunter's ability considered to be combat damage? It seems more like a Prey Upon, where it just deals damage.

I'm not sure if that only applies to Prey Upon as it's an instant/sorcery and creature tapping abilities are always considered combat damage..

@yummysinsemilla

The ability isn't combat damage. Combat damage is any damage dealt by attacking or blocking creatures in combat. Even if you activated it in combat, targeting an attacking or blocking creature, it wouldn't be combat damage since the assassin itself isn't attacking or blocking.

@Opant1

Icy Manipulator and Royal Assassin costs 6BlackBlack to kill that same elf. Sure that combo can kill any thing you can target and kill but with this you wouldn't have to phone in creature tap abilities into a color that isn't so great at tapping creatures anymore. Black is still pretty good at boosting power though.

Although the casting mana cost of 3B and the requirement of B to activate its ability is quiet steep for a 1/1, it is quiet beneficial if you know what to equip/enchant it with. Cards like Basilisk Collar, Gorgon's Head, Onyx Mage, Baleful Eidolon, or the like can suddenly make this card very efficient at its job. A real treasure to behold. If your not to interested in deathtouch, keep in mind that black is also the color of cards likes Unholy Strength or you can splash for another color like green for Rancor so that the hunter can take out any */3 creatures.
