Great spell to slow your opponent down. IMHO, this imprints with Isochron Scepter better than vanilla Counterspell as it can lock your opponent's game.

Very nice counterspell, IMHO better than Remand, because it's slowing down your opponet even more.

One of the most evil candidates for Isochron Scepter, turns that seeming downside into a huge benefit.

Counters a spell and denies your opponents a draw. Not bad at all.

Jace's Erasure + Memory Lapse on their turn = 80% Counterspell. 80% is just a rough estimate... unless the opponent is able to draw again.

This is a 1-for-1 in terms of card advantage, since your opponent needs an extra turn to draw the card. Tempo-wise, it nullifies their second turn while using up yours. In this respect, it's very similar to Remand; it's like a fixed Time Walk where your opponent gets to play their second land.

Best art for the spell. The art for this in Homelands was dreadful.

Really wouldn't mind a functional reprint of this...

"Well shit."

- My opponent after I did this to his Mirari's Wake, and then Path to Exiled his creature.

What do you do? Take the land, or wait the full turn for the mana accelerating enchantment? Most people automatically take the land unconsciously.

this card needs a reprint. it's not a solid counter, but as a situational counter is one of the best. and the rebecca guay art would look super cool with the modern frame.

Why do people always want to mill after Memory Lapse? It kind of misses the point.
4/5 for the 'Poor mans Time Walk'

Best card in Homelands, hands down.

It's interesting that people at the time thought it was useless (partially, of course, because Counterspell was overpowered and this inevitably got compared to that.) As someone else said, it's, in some ways, the poor man's time walk, because in the early game it will make your opponent waste two of the most important parts of their turn (their draw and their mana for that turn.)

Usually a card that only delays your opponent isn't that great, but this is a one-for-one, which makes it incredibly useful for slowing faster decks down until you have the mana out to use more permanent control cards.

Arguably better than Counterspell?

I would argue that this is better than Counterspell in most circumstances... It doesnt cost UU, which is a fairly significant advantage in the early turns (assuming you're playing multiple colors)... It gives you knowledge of your opponent's next draw, which is really nice... and it can screw opponents out of drawing land...

Imagine fighting a deck filled with Memory Lapses, Chittering Rats, Grasp of Phantoms, Time Ebb and other similar cards... after a few turns of throwing stuff back on top of their library, you're guaranteed that they have not drawn any land, and they're likely stuck on however many land were in their opening hand... so even though you've only traded 1-for-1 a bunch, you have inadvertently mana-screwed your opponent... This occurrence is true even with just a single Memory Lapse, though only to a small degree...

Even without any support of any form, this is a fine unconditional hard-counter... Sure, if you use it on a bomb or something important, they get to try again next turn, but the same is true for far less useful things - they HAVE to draw their random chaff again, instead of something new...

I would absolutely love to see Memory Lapse printed again with the new boarder, and possibly new art...
