Only 3.5 stars?! This card is great for a draw based deck, or any deck that lacks drawin

Want some Mind's Eyes for your multiplayer deck that produces blue mana but don't feel like spending more then two bucks? Then this common from Prophesy will do the trick! And you don't even spend the mana, your opponents just short themselves! More often then not you'll either be drawing cards, or your opponents will not be casting spells. Win Win much?

Awesome rhystic and drawing card. I know by experience that players won't pay that 1 90% of the times.

This card is guaranteed to either slow their game down or speed yours up, speaking relatively it's kinda the same thing anyway.

This card is pretty good in casual duels, but it's power absolutely explodes in multiplayer. You're guaranteed at least 5 cards out of this puppy before someone gets wise and destroys it. This belongs in any multiplayer blue deck!

What a ridiculous enchantment. I believe the last time i dropped this on the table i got 10 cards out of the deal. Like I said, ridiculous.

Goes great with Jace Beleren and anything else that causes all players to draw cards. Hmm, this is looking like the start of a mill deck.

The fact that it's a "may" ability is what makes it ridiculous. Your opponent can't even hope to mill you out.

I'm shocked MasterOfEtherium hasn't made a retarded all-caps comment on this card yet.

One of my favorite things about this card is that it makes it really hard for your opponent to get any card advantage once it comes down. If they're only drawing one per turn, by turn 3 they may or may not be able to pay that extra 1 without much problem. But if they're constantly replenishing their hand, they'll almost always either have to sit on the extra cards or forfeit their advantage.

Even if they're not running much in the way of draw, it's really unlikely that this card won't at least be able to replicate itself if not give you an early advantage. And at a very splashable 3 CMC, it's hard to see a case where this won't end up in your favor.

One of the greatest multiplayer cards ever made. "Did you pay one for that?"

Oh, this ROCKS. No one is gonna slow down their spells for this, unless you have that Phyrexian that makes opponents lose 1 life when they draw a card.

Such a disparity in the cycle of Rhysitc cards: all the others are completely unplayable, while this is an indespensible addition to almost any blue multiplayer deck.

Player1: Rhystic Study! I'll be drawing like crazy!

Player2: Disenchant, and I'll pay the {1}.

I initially threw this in a deck to offset the lost draw from an Island Sanctuary. The first multiplayer game I was involved in I had 30 cards in hand for most of the game (with a Library of Leng). I was blown away. I actually wound up throwing in a Words of Worship just so when I inevitably wanted to skip a draw it wouldn't go to waste.

How is this card a common? HOW?

@Ideatog: I have never seen this card used by someone who isn't packing at least a few cancels, counterspells, and so on.

Now if you opponent decides to Krosan Grip it, then you have permission to T_T

I always wondered whether it was to be read "You may (draw a card unless that player pays 1)," or "(You may draw a card) unless that player pays 1."

A subtle distinction, but it's cleared up in the errata.

Question here: Let's say I have this on the field and the opponent plays a spell, and I want to count with a Mana Leak or something. Could I still counter after this ability takes place, or do I counter beforehand?

@GlassJoetheChamp

Yes, you would counter after this ability goes on the stack. This ability is triggered when they cast the spell, not when it resolves. So the stack would look like this;

Their spell -> Rhystic Study's ability -> Mana Leak

They would first choose whether or not to pay 1 for this, then you would counter it.

The best part that really makes this one of the best enchantments in the game is that it is a may ability.

If, let's say, you are nearly out of cards in your deck, just decide that you shouldn't draw a card.

Playing against a colleague today when he sent 5 burn my way, I had 5 life. He tapped out all his mana and I had 2 of these on the board.

I drew 4 cards in response, one of them was a quash, I quashed his lightning bolt and he removed them.

Oh to my dismay! He had another burst lightning in his hand and I was now at 3 life with him sitting on a goblin fireslinger :/.

On my turn I top decked another quash >.>, put a few lords down (2 mana merfolk lords) and hoped he had no answer on his turn. He got me to 2, I quashed his burst, and the next turn I hit him for fatal :).

I really, really, really, like rhystic study ^^.

While it's a fun card, its effectiveness is overrated, especially when facing opponents with significant mana acceleration.

While the main purpose of this card is to draw more cards, the secondary, more frequently implemented purpose of this card is to make your opponents' spells cost {1} more if they do not want to incur a new penalty. By about each opponent's fifth turn in Commander games, the overall effectiveness of this card drastically drops because opponents can have far more ability to cast their desired spells of the turn and still "pay the {1}".

At that time, Rhystic Study's deterrent effect indubitably still influences spent mana, although for many players, this becomes rather inconsequential to their overall plans from their fifth turn and forward. Rhystic Study then largely sits on the board without consequence or benefit to its controller.

Rhystic Study's card draw benefit can be very beneficial at all times in which a new card is acquired, but cards drawn from Rhystic Study are most likely to be drawn early in the game, when opponents want to establish board position and don't care about deterring the card draw. Because Rhystic Study typically is cast on Turn 3 (or Turn 2, if one has used mana acceleration cards), its window of effective card draw benefit is limited.

Opponent chooses one: all of their spells cost 1 more, or you draw a card every time they cast a spell.

One of the best commons printed ever period.
