A little expensive for my tastes - most red decks that hit eight mana are either doing something wrong or else probably won't need to clear the board - but there's no denying its power and it kicks ass in multiplayer. Good storyline moment too.

Run in EDH with Jhoria as your commander. See where this is going?

The flavor text and art is so much better in this version. Why did they change it for the core set?

I like the flavor of cards from around this time. They fit the story so well.
Well yes, Barrin did this. This was after he went on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against Phyrexia after they killed his family. This is how he quite literally went out with a Bang.

I remember when I first saw this card... in a Standard runnin counterspell itself, we used to look at its first ability and cry...
Actually, it's greatest feature, is the storyline behind it.

I like how there are massive storyline spoilers on this card, along with Recover and numerous other cards throughout Invasion block.

@Kirbster In the novel, when Barrin did this to his homeland, he reflected that he was basically doing the same thing Urza did with the Golgothian Sylex (which is horribly underwhelming for such a powerful in-story artifact), but with himself as the vessel instead of an artifact.
I think it even describes how he feels as the sheer amount of mana he's channeling rips him to bits.

BARRIN: SMASH!!!!!!
Urza: If I'd known you could do that, I would have taken more of your DNA for the bloodlines project. Maybe even given you a clone. o_O

what about that one card that adds suspend counters to a spell?
Why doesn't his card mention this as an activated ability or something? Has he been able to do this all along?

Time Stop and Mindbreak Trap both work on this, as does Ertai's Meddling.
