An okay card. With this and Vengeful Pharaoh, I like that black seems to be taking a few baby steps into exploring classic Egyptian fantasy tropes. Wizards, just give us a zombie/skeleton Sphinx and I'll be impossibly happy.

Desirable common black flier for drafts. Protection from Mind Control is a good thing! Makes Act of Treason worth playing maindeck.
Just go full circle and put phyrexian ghoul into a core set.
Edit. You are right, Fallen Angel would be full circle. First eater in a core set an all. But Phyrexian Ghoul is the oldest common that I can remember that does that.

I actually prefer this to Vampire Aristcrat et al due to its evasion and the fact that it gets a pemanent boost when you sacrifice a creature.

I'm curious. Can you sacrifice more then one creature to give Devouring Swarm additional +1/+1? I was told you could, but I checked the set FAQ and it wasn't even on the list. Please Help.

Yes, you can. It is actually one of the main uses of this card. You attack with all you creatures once they are low on life. Should this guy not be blocked, you can 'eat' all the blocked creatures for more damage to the head. If it will win you the game, you eat every creature you got that won't be doing one or more damage to them. You could use it the ability to protect it from a blocking creature or to kill a blocked one, but I honestly don't think that would be worth it in all but the most extreme cases.
That is really the essence of . Win at all costs, no matter how much it might hurt you. A more flavorful version might have been "Sacrifice a creature, Pay 1 life: ~ get +2/+2 until end of turn."

I can't seem to find this, can it sac itself? I know it doesn't make much sense but sometimes I need morbid more than I need a flier.

@Anarchyxmatt: Yes, it can sacrifice itself; it's a creature you control and is therefore valid for paying the cost of its ability. This means you can use it for Morbid or even to chump block, sac then play a Morbid instant.

This is my favorite 3 drop sac. I has flying early without having to sac. In late game, get it big and deliver the final blow. Plays well with Blood Artist and Birthing Pod.

Why is Phyrexian Ghoul "full circle"?
