Notice they won't help each other out if you have 2 out. There are 3 Griffins in 2012, none of them too exciting.

Good in a casual griffin tribal deck, and maybe in a m12 draft, but that is about it.

Maybe we'll see some griffin tribal in Innistrad. Or at least some cool griffins. The same goes for other M12 tribals like spider and illusion.

Great in limited if you happen to have other griffins. Otherwise very mediocre.

The best 'griffin' to use for this purpose I believe is Mothdust Changeling.

When Doug Beyer discusses the flavor of this card on July 13th, he talks about the various attempts to create "mounts." That's awesome, but this card isn't even the first attempt using this method. Let's not forget Cloudreach Cavalry and Skirk Outrider. I do like that Griffin Rider gets the bigger "mount" boost.

Better than Cloudreach Cavalry. The art looks cool as well. 4/4 flying for 2 mana? I want it!

In M12 Limited, this guys a beating. Why? Look at the good white cards.

MOST OF THE CREATURES ARE GRIFFINS!!!

Take a mediocre creature type and balance it out with awesome support cards. I love it! Griffin's are cool, making them somewhat playable is even cooler.

Totally making mono-white Griffin pauper. Guarantee I'll get rolled by my buddy's mono-red Goblin pauper every time, but I don't care, it will be for the lulz.

I'm sorry I'm such a critic. This really is a great card, and immediately makes any Griffins in the game more playable than they used to be. If therewere outright good Griffins before, those are now fantastic, but I've never really looked into Griffin tribal before.

But...does anybody else think this particular 'griffin' looks a bit too much like an owl?
awkward angle...

EDIT: oh yeah, and it's a Knight. This card needs a new, even better art already so..very..badly.

I'm surprised no one thought of adding it to the the precon knights deck which gives you griffin guide. I think that would be hilarious.

I think it's kind of funny that this gal will get flying when the only other griffin you have on the board is a Fledgling Griffin.

Anyway, awesome card in a Griffin tribal deck, which in itself won't do very well unless it's Legacy/Vintage and you're bringing out some of the older, weirder cards like Azorius First-Wing.

I immediately thought about using these in a knight tribal, Knight Exemplar etc. A few griffins could make it pretty flavorful.

I made a mono-white draft deck with multiples of a lot of good white cards, and ever round I managed to make the game go something along the lines of this.

Turn 1: Elite Vanguard
Turn 2: This
Turn 3: Griffin Sentinel
Turn 4: Assault Griffin
Turn 5: Peregrine Griffin

Part of making a Core Set I'm sure involves making cards that work together in a draft. Hence why Manic Vandal is a common in M12 whereas in the Mirrodin block it would've been an uncommon at the very least. Kite Shield is an Uncommon whereas Accorder's Shield is a common. I think Wizards made each color and most of the mechanics that people tend to build around, milling, bloodthirst, a very good play set in M12. Giant Growth and Lightning Bolt would have been too powerful in this core set. By lowering the power of a lot of cards, they made the drafts a lot more fun, in my opinion. Necessity breeds invention, and I've seen some extremely interesting combos that wouldn't have been made if people had more powerful cards around. Magic is a community, and Wizards is using that fact to make the game more fun.

Griffin Sentinel is probably the best partner for this. A 1/3 for 3cmc isn't necessarily bad especially if you consider it has both flying and vigilance which means with these both on the field you can swing for 5 flying each turn and still have a blocker and that assumes that all you have available is these two. Good in an all white deck, good in a knight deck, good in humans, this card, with at least a couple of fairly inexpensive griffins in the deck for back, can be a boon to a handful of deck types.

Get this guy turn 2 and Griffin Sentinel turn 3. It's not bad, and it's easy to pull off :P

I love this creature. As weak as griffins usually are, they goldfish pretty well. I'm considering building a griffin deck for when I play casually with my fiance. For bonus flavor, play with Teremko Griffin so they can attack and block together and be blocked together as a group, which makes sense.

Does anyone know of a card that I can find with the same kind of abilities as Griffin rider? Example(possibly a Pegasus rider or a dragon rider). If you could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Equip him with Runed Stalactite and he gives himself his own boost. No other creatures necessary!
