This would be playable without bloodthirst. But, given that red has more ways to activate it than any other color, this card might just be amazing.

Bloodthirst is a good ability to throw in a core set. It emphasises the usage of the second main phase for new players.

If you can get in a hit to face then ya great. Just don't spend too many turns trying befor you just cast it as a 2/2.

I actually dislike how they brought back Bloodthirst. It always seems to raise the CMC of cards to a level where the bloodthirst is necessary; which it might as well be, since with a simple pinger, it's not that hard to achieve other than early game(without throwing away good burn spells)

@Dr.Pingas
That is arguably true of some of the bloodthirst cards, e.g. Vampire Outcasts, but definitely not this one. 3/3 first strike for 3 is a bargain, especially on a common red creature. Meanwhile, 2/2 first strike for 3 isn't a particularly bad deal, so the bloodthirst here is useful without being essential.

@Dr.Pingas: Bloodthirst raising the cost? Not in that case, at least. Do you remember what we used to get for in Core Sets so far? Certainly nota solid 2/2first striker.
And since Gray Ogre hasn't seen the light of day in quite a while, it was about time to equip him with some contemporary abilities :P

@Whitewing - There are quite a few ways to send damage your opponent's way by the time you can cast this (evasion, DD, etc)...most of the time, you'll be able to cast it as a 3/3 First Striker with relative ease.

Probable 3/3 First Striker for 2R. Do my eyes fool me? Red is finnaly getting greatly costed creatures.
EDIT: So, I am away from home and from my Magic Deck and felt and urge to play. Bought the "Blood and Fire" intro pack (BR bloodthirst) and this is one hell of a creature. Really solid. I am willing to say it`s the bet one in the deck. And it`s deliciously evil when paired with Onyx Mage.

This is great addition to m12. A solid mid cost red creature that requires a little skill, or pre-thought, to play for maximum potential. It seems as though the days of paying 2R for a 2/1 First Striker are gone, and with this as the replacement it's just as well.
I've always felt as though red should have aggressive creatures, both in cost and function, as it is suppose to be the most aggressive colour. M12 certainly delivers.

I was playing an M12 draft once, and I got milled to death.
The odd thing was, i was playing a Bloodthirst Deck.

Mode - You forgot Goblin Piker, which is a great example because it's even still in M12!

I prefer Porcelain Legionaire but this is still a pretty solid card a possible 3/3 for 3 first striker....I have no quarrels with that.

Ah, red, you so much better than in the last two core sets. Blood ogre, gorehorn minotaurs, goblin fireslinger, shock, and incinerate. The only commons you'll ever need. ...unless you want Aether Adepts and Gravediggers. Good job of balancing the colors this set, too!

This usually comes out being as big as Hill Giant, but with first strike and costs less. Definitely a solid common.
This is one of the most dangerous cards in 2012 draft (next to Doom Blade, Aven Fleetwing, and Serra Angel). If you can get it out, thirsty or quenched of blood, what are they going to do? Block it with Greater Basilisk? HA! Not without making it Titanic!
I can say, however, that G/R 2012 draft didn't go as well as I hoped... Milling and Fliers proved too tough for my big stuff.

Pretty awesome considering I usually immediately throw away any cards with "Ogre" in the name.

When you consider that most creatures played in a draft or sealed-deck game have less than 4 toughness, a 2/2 or 3/3 first-striking ogre is really, REALLY good. It doesn't matter whether you're drafting R/x aggro or a more control-y build -- this guy will lay down the law. Painful to block, painful to attack into. He shall almost certainly remain a Pauper staple for many years to come.
