Unless you're playing against control decks which need mana during your turns, this card has become useless with M10's manaburn rulings change.

This is a very interesting card. I think that the threat of accelerating your opponent would actualy slow down the game, since everyone involved would be tapping out to keep charge counters off of it.

I've never been a fan of cards that affect both players evenly, it's always possible to tip the scales in your own favor due to specific situations, but this card is fairly open ended, and depending on how the rules work with removing multiple counters at once, the M10 (no-manaburn) rules could really interfere with even the best uses of this card.

It'd be interesting to see a permanent that caused the mana-burn rules to come into play while it's out, but they'd have to add even more tools for that decktype to work, seeing as it wasn't the greatest issue in the game when mana-burn was static. In exchange for being suseptible to removal effects, I think 2damage for each unspent mana would be fair. Especially if it's a creature without shroud or indestructable. Though it could get good if the effect stacked for each copy of the card you had in play, similar to Citadel of Pain.
This card had it's uses in the past, required specific decktypes due to the opponent being able to effect it, and is nearly useless in the current game.

Could be fun in multiplayer.

With the removal of mana burn, this is now among the most useless cards in the entire game. Sadly, what was once a fun, tricky card is now completely crippled. And sadly, now officially 0.5/5 material...

Why in god, barring mana burn, do you want to give them more mana? Mana Flare is not fun to play with any more.

This needs a reprint where it also drains mana from each player's mana pool so they can't just tap to avoid it...
I don't think people understand how much this hurts control, which is rampant in this block and the nearby ones. It's of little value in Legacy, though, and that's all people seem to care about with cards this old anymore. What a shame.

This card is fun in multiplayer, if you're playing with friends who agree not to just tap their lands and drain the cache for no reason.

Mana Cache + Stony Silence + Memnarch. How's that for a bizarre use of one of the most frustrating legendary cards out there? Though, to keep using Memnarch after Stony Silence hits the field, you will need a Neurok Transmuter.

A cool option for a Zedruu deck maybe? Otherwise, not so good. 1.5/5
