Does that mean you could animate a peice of equipment and then equip it to itself?

Yes, you can animate any equipment. But equipment that is a creature can't be equipped to anything. So if it was equipped to some creature, it will fall off. And 0-mana equipment will die.

what makes this card awesome is that its type is enchant non-creature artifact
Prototype portal, this, pemmin's aura, and a seat of the synod exiled by the portal. A zuran orb just makes it stupid. "Look, each untapped synod I crank out powers up the untap on the portal....guess I'll MAKE ANOTHER ONE. A few zillion seats of the synod later and you can sac half to your zuran orb. Now sit back with untold gobs o' life and a next turn filled with LIMITLESS blue mana.

So as long as this isn't a creature... It's a creature. Yep.

Seems really overcosted. Always has. Want them to reprint this for U or maybe W (in whites color pie sort of thanks to Rolling Stones)

Weirdly, if you get it to enchant a noncreature, nonartifact permanent (perhaps by liquimetal coating the permanent before casting), it stays attached. This is because the continuous effect it generates turns the permanent into an artifact creature, so state-based actions see an aura with "enchant artifact" enchanting an artifact and leave it there.
