Almost any spell that can be played for zero mana has its uses. Decks w/ Death's Shadow, Repay in Kind, Fire Covenant, etc can make this card a 4+ star.

While we're at the subject of this being a possible inspiration for phyrexian mana -
this one's rather useful in an infect deck. I'd gladly pay 2 life for two poison counters.
(I'd even more gladly give my opponent 3 life and four poison counters,
but this one still doesn't seem like a bad choice.)

I couldve seen this maybe being useful in an infect deck, but why would you use this over Mutagenic Growth? No land requirement, same power increase as well as toughness, and the same life payment, but can also be played for G
