A lesser version of Sudden Death. But it's still fun to play with.

Won't see much play. Disfigure and Urge to Feed are almost always going to be better because they're much more efficient.

This saved me a couple of times in the release tournament, good removal for black. The landfall effect is easy to meet, so you can blast anything with 4 toughness or less pretty easily.

I'm glad they made it possible to play lands at instant speed. Really helps out, you know?

should have had stackable landfall of some sort.

I'm not sure about this card. I like it, but have had many disputes with my friends over using this card on a creature who has been regenerated.

I think regenerate does not prevent the change in toughness, b/c this spell is not technically damage.... some of my friends think it would.

Any opinions?

lenabena44: Regenerating doesnt affect toughness 0 or lesser. Creautures with toughness 0 or lesser are instantly dead no matter what your friends are saying. Thats why Tomb hex, Disfigure, Sudden Death, Last Gasp spell are so nice.

Yeah, you can also cast 3 of these, with "landfall", on Darksteel Colossus and end him!

Was fun while it lasted, but deprecated by Grasp of Darkness

Target creatures gets -2/-2 until end of turn.

Landfall-If you had a land enter the battlefield under your control this turn, that creature gets an additional -2/-2 until end of turn for each land that entered the battlefield under your control this turn.

Maybe something like that would be better. It just seems underpowered to me right now.

Less mana efficient than Disfigure and Grasp of Darkness, even with landfall. The only plus point is that this is 2Black instead of Black or BlackBlack; which makes it easier to cast, if you are playing hybrid mana decks.

@Lateralis0ne - You could use this the turn after your opponent played a large creature...or you could make use of Harrow, Crop Rotation, Path to Exile, or Second Sunrise to pop out an instant-speed land. You could also combine a Shimmer Myr with the artifact lands from the original Mirrodin block...

Ugh. This just doesn't DO enough to be exciting. Searing Blaze is removal that burns the dead guy's controller, which pulls a lot of weight in mono red. Groundswell is better than Giant Growth when you landfall. Rest for the Weary combo'd with Cradle of Vitality. Admittedly, Mysteries of the Deep is now just a bad Jace's Ingenuity (and honestly, neither saw play while Jace, the Mind-Sculptor was legal in standard), but 3/5 cards in this cycle are actually cool cards I would consider playing outside of limited environments. This one is not one of those 3.

@DacenOctavio, I think you're demanding too much of a common-slot removal spell. Sure, one could argue that it's a pretty simple card (although IMO I think it's got some subtle complexity to it involving the landfall clause). But sometimes having a clean, simple card is better than one with all the bells and whistles. And in a case like this, it can help teach players the nuances of a new mechanic/keyword so that the complicated, "cool" cards that use the same mechanic in more interesting ways resonate more.

All in all, I think this is more than adequate at filling the role it needs to in the decks it will appear in (Limited, casual, Pauper, players on a budget who only buy one fat pack per set, etc).

You need to have landfall trigger to have the spell perform to the mana cost? Nah.

Sure, it isn't the best removal. BUT, removal is removal, and removal that can stop regeneration/indestructible is EVEN BETTER. Considering you are virtually guaranteed -4/-4 for 3 cmc, I think this is a great deal. Just remember, not everthing can be as awesome as dismember
