If your opponent has a lot of cards in their graveyard, this could be very devastating, getting rid of reanimation threats AND providing a life drain spell that's cheaper than Drain Life and Consume Spirit AND without the black-mana restriction.

Use this to cripple Knight of Reliquary. This can be a good finisher as well.

I think it got it's ups and downs.
You can't reliably put it into your deck with the purpose of a drain life spell or a finisher in general, since your opponent might not have enough stuff in their graveyard when you need it. Casting this for like X = 2 or = 3 is mediocre at best.
So if I would put it in a deck, the only with the intent of removing someones graveyard, and sometimes gaining some life and dealing some damage that way. But for any other purpose it's not reliable enough.

I love my mill decks but they only see casual use. I typically die just before I can finish them off. I can see this worthwhile to survive another turn or two and possibly getting rid of a few problems in their graveyard.

I love how one function (removing cards in graveyard) limits the other function (can only remove as many cards as they have). And it stinks in multiples! Very interesting card.

Not too good, but not to bad either.

In limited, this can very easily be as much as you want to pay for it, and an 8-point+ swing is nothing to scoff at, especially at instant speed.

It gets a plus from me for being able to get rid of any of the legendary Eldrazis if they hit the graveyard and if you play it in response to their triggered ability of shuffling themselves and the entire graveyard back into the library. Not that that would happen very often, lol.

I think there's enough valuable targets for this to be a maindeck card. Hellspark, Hell's Thunder, Vengvine, Bloodghast, Lands when Knight of the Reliquary is out, etc. And that's just in standard. Plus, even if you don't have a specific target in mind, paying 5 or 6 mana during the end step before your turn to take a cheap-shot at someone is always fun.

Works beautifully with mill/discard decks, an absolute wonder. Multiplayer games as well since they last an incredibly long time. Wonderfully delicious card

Vengevine, blood ghast, might be sideboard in standard if your usual playing pllace runs lots of vampires and green decks.

Obviously this card is not "under-rated" but I think it is under utilized. A great deal of decks will have 7 -8 cards in a graveyard in any kind of good matchup in black. Beyond the utility of getting rid of Vengevines and other such recursion this often hits for a Drain life effect. I think most black decks should be running one or 2 of these cards as a finisher, or just a way to really flip around a close game.

Wow... a black Fireball + Stream of Life + exile all their best graveyard cards? How is this not 5/5? Amazing!!

Play a few Mind Funerals, then play this the turn after you play Haunting Echoes targeting the land.

My Advocates would like to say hello. There's nothing more fun than messing around with the stack to replace "returning from graveyard to hand" with "exiling from graveyard".

I really like this card. In the right deck, its two limits (your manabase and their GY) are basically moot. Imagine this in MBC with a bit of ramp. Basically an auto include; sideboard at worst.

The instant speed and single black are what really set it over the top, though. In theory, this is better than all various black drain effects simply for being faster and cheaper.

And yes, Vorthoses, I agree; the flavor is fantastic.

Hidden EDH gem? Well hidden to my playgroup at least. It may not hit everyone like Exsanguinate or damage creatures like Death Grasp, but the graveyard hate plus instant speed can certainly make up for that. Very solid.
