Why can't it just have fear? This, along with the new Terror (Doom Blade), indicates that black is done being "weak" against artifacts.

this card won the game for me at the prerelease

Looks like Severed Legion needed a slight buff, huh?

I wouldn't say that it's strictly better than Severed Legion. Legion is a zombie which means that it benefits from tribal bonuses while Warlock is only a Human. It's still an awesome card in limited though. At the prerelease I went to, these things were a nightmare for nonblack decks to deal with.

Fear makes creatures blockable only by black creatures AND artifact creatures as well... This one got a little pumped fear coz it cant be blocked by artifact creatures... The name and flavor text suits well for its abilities, nice one Dread Warlock...

he's a wizard... obviously not great tribal purposes, especially not in black, but if used in a deck without any zombie buffs he's better than Severed Legion.

Not bad for three though not sure it's worth the three mana to me...

I think they gave him this sort of "empowered fear" due to the massive presence of artifact colored creatures.

Wow, even a robot (artifact creature) with no emotions is afraid of this guy, that purple smoke must be some pretty scary ***.

Pump him up and beat down on your opponents.

Decent, but aside from color, it's strictly worse than Phantom Warrior.

@ZEvilMustache: I think it's because at the time they were fixing the fear/intimidate issue, so they avoided it in the Core Set. Other than that, Dregrage could be correct, too.

@achilleselbow: "Aside from color" is enough to make a card not strictly better or worse. Blue is supposed to be better with evasion, but that doesn't mean this card is worse than that one. In any case, Inkfathom Infiltrator probably wins against either.

I think I will call him Dark Magician because I believe in "heart of the cards" instead of this mythic-rarity peeps are talking about ;)

and to make this silly dream closer to the analogy, I shall enchant my dark magician with lavamancer's skill and call it dark magic attack every time I tap for 2 damage ;)

I think this card has the coolest illustration ever! Daarken did a nice job!

This guy was seriously awesome in casual back in the day. The "super fear" was incredibly handy in dealing with my friend's Thopter Foundry deck.

3.5 for being a good common card

extra 0.5 for having very good artwork

Its interesting to see how blocking has been approached in black, I wonder if artifact creatures were used often around the time this was released?
