Sweet! Ferrets!

Ok, Why is this card rated at ***?

First a cheap 1/1 that costs only one green. That by itself makes it potential material for any creature pumping deck. (Although it not being an elf is a slight drawback)

Also thanks to its +0/2 trick I'm not afraid to attack with it for fear of losing it. By itself that makes it better than half of the elves in my elf deck.

Then there is the taping trick. As just a wimpy 1/1 No one is going to be afraid of it, and so will let it attack rather than throw a creature in the way. early in the game, this card would be invaluable and dominate the field every time it attacked. Latter in the game this card would suddenly become a lot scarier as the opponent's life approaches 5 or less.

There are just so many uses for this card that I can hardly see why its not rated at at least ****
Indeed, the only disadvantage I can think of about this card is that its not an elf. (Thus not allowing it to be eligible for "for every elf" and "tap and elf" effects) and so making it less useful for elf decks.

So:

Base rating: ** (due to higher expectancy from 1/1s to )

First ability: +*
Second ability: +*
Synergy between abilities: */2

Final rating: **** */2

Also, I love this card! Ferrets, Yay! Now, beginning the petition for magic to make more ferrets... Dear wizards of the cost... bla bla bla... more ferrets... bla bla bla... Even more ferrets! bla bla bla Ferrets Muhahahahahahaha!

Not a bad card, but the ruling that says the tapping effect doesn't happen if it dies makes significantly worse. Is that only with the new M10 combat damage rules?

Zoah is right. My friend used to play this card against me and it was WELL worth the one mana cost. You never want to block it with your 1/1 and 2/2 creatures because you'll lose them the next turn. So, you end up letting this thing get in a few free hits until you can have out a creature that can kill it. It's not overly powerful, but definitely worth a 4/5.

I love how one of the best cards in Homelands is a ferret. This is a really efficient creature. A great first-turn play.

Is it possible we've found the good Homelands card?

Awesome little creature, and it's amazing that a common from Homelands was so powerful that WotC decided to upgrade it's rarity to uncommon.

@achilleselbow:
No, apparently it has been the case for some time that the ability to tap down blockers only works if the Ferrets are still alive (the ruling dates back to late-2008; M10 was mid-2009). As far as I can tell, it's being treated as a normal triggered ability and not as a delayed trigger. Looks like I've been misinterpreting the card, too. If it worked the way I used to think it did, then maybe it would read something like "Whenever Joven's Ferrets is blocked by one or more creatures, tap those creatures at end of combat. They don't untap during their controller's next untap phase."

Just to add to the confusion, Thicket Basilisk from Fourth Edition uses the exact same style of wording for its ability, but later reprints changed the wording to make its ability work even if it dies in combat. C'mon Wizards, update Joven's Ferrets too!

For some reason, lure won't work.
I haven't a clue why though...

10/1/2008 The second ability will trigger only if Joven's Ferrets is still on the battlefield at end of combat. If it's been dealt lethal combat damage and destroyed during that combat (or has left the battlefield during that combat by any other means), its ability won't trigger and the creatures that blocked it won't be affected.

It seems to me like there is no reason for that ruling.

The only ferret creature type in the whole game! LOL!

AND it actually has a good ability/CMC! Enchant/equip your ferrets and annoy your opponent to death!

4.5/5!

@CorkBulb - The only one that's printed with that type...all changelings are ferrets (and toads, incidentally).

Extremely fun with Rancor, since there's no good answer to it.

Let it through? 3 damage a turn starting from turn 2.

Block it? You won't have anything big enough to kill it for a few turns; it'll trample over any chump blockers or small regenerators, and tap regenerators or high-toughness blockers. Even once you finally have a fatty big enough to kill it and with enough toughness to avoid dying (meaning at least 3/4, generally), you'll be losing it for two turns in the process, which is a pretty big price for dealing with a one-drop.

Removal? Congratulations, you wasted removal on a one-drop... and I got my Rancor back so I can drop it on something bigger.

Also, these creatures got to keep their unique creature type. I'm surprised they weren't errated to beasts in the grand creature type update, or at least ferret beasts.

Also, if you want to use more recent cards with it in casual: Madcap Skills.

I still think they're angry at the little red triangle in the bottom right of the art.
Must be a Trigon of Rage.
