When I asked the rules forum about whether first strike kills the creature after the first strike combat phase the person that responded said that it wouldn't be destoryed until end of normal combat and therefore could kil your creature too from blocking. Now I wonder if they were incorrect, since this card leans in that direction...

@Donovan_Fabian: Unfortunately you got (probably) a wrong answer in the forum. If you activate the first strike of the Kathari and it meets a non-first striking creature in combat, it will destroy it after the first strike damage step and the Kathari will live on to tell his glorious story. If the guy who answered thought about a double block situation he would be right: Two 1/1 flying bird tokens block the Kathari, Kathari kills one token in first strike step, second bird kills Kathari in normal combat step. Nevertheless is the activated ability far too expensive at imho.

This is a solid card for a common. If you keep the 3 mana open (which is not difficult mid to late game) your opponent will think twice about attacking you unless he/she has first/double strikers or overwhelming creature advantage. Not quite strong enough for top tier decks, though, IMO.

Please compare this card to a Vampire nighthawk... it showcases just how mediocre it is.
That being said, the cost to give him first strike is to high, I think would have been better.

2,6!!???
OMG this is underrated, it is a flying deathtoucher in black! if you pay the 3 CMC, it can whack most other flying fatties and live, and even kamikaze most of the more overpowered flying creatures (baneslayer, I'm looking at you).
It is COMMON!!! Damn people, a black flying 3CMC deathtoucher with possible first strike at common!
Even the first strike angels will fear this one (except for the protection from from black ones ofc).

Feels a lot like Volcano Imp. Only a little bit better.
Whenever a creature an opponent controls is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, you may return target artifact card from your graveyard to your hand.

Sorry Kathari, your thunder is gone.
EDIT
@sleetfox:
Emrakul has protection, genius. Neither this nor Glissa can block it.

Emrakul only has protection from colored SPELLS. The kathari can still block it.

This thing was a bomb in draft. In constructed, who would bother with it, but in a draft, first strike flying deathtouch is a force to be reckoned with.

Cool card, 3.5/5 More importantly, though: fantastic limited design in shards block, Melvin loves it

You do realize this card can kill Baneslayer Angel and Shepherd of the Lost right? Last time I checked that was something that Vampire Nighthawk failed miserably at.
