I remember when I was a lot younger, back in the days when you could still buy revised at the local shop. My best friend had a revised Serra Angel and he always used it in his white decks. Oh and by the way, our decks were almost always mono colored. Only when we had gotten one of those awesome Chronicles gold creatures would we make those decks. He always played White, his brother always played Red or Black, and I always played Green and Artifacts. haha. Good times.

gasimakos1 posed an interesting thought: is this the best old-school creature? That person said he/she'd vote for Hypnotic Specter. I think you have to throw Sengir Vampire into the pool of candidates. Maybe Shivan Dragon and Mahamoti Djinn deserve spots, as well. Notice they're all Flying. Notice, too, that, despite green being the 'creature color', I haven't mentioned any creatures for it. Two green creatures that might deserve mention would be Elvish Archers (which would suggest mention of Savannah Lions) and Craw Giant (who was released in '94 in Legends and in '95 in Chronicles - around the time of Revised and 4th).
Anyway, interesting thought. I think that, as the original poster suggested, either Serra Angel or Hypnotic Specter would receive the most votes in such a poll ... and probably Serra Angel. Whether or not she's actually, mechanically, the best creature in early Magic, she's arguably the most iconic creature of early Magic. That is, she's the most well-known and most-respected, on the whole ... and was probably the most-played.
