dark banishing... 2/1, for 4; if it were 3 that would rule. but 4 is to much.

Fantastic in Limited. Used to be good in Constructed, till it got too expensive (and then especially after Shriekmaw got printed).

This new art really reminds me of Kratos from God of War. Well, he would have BEEN Kratos if it weren't for those baggy pants. :P

Ah, the one they were all named for, "187 creatures" aka Momentary Blink's best friends. First introduced in Visions, where it's set number was 187, which, by pure coincidence, is the code for murder in Los Angeles Police Dept. Those who did not know about the origin of the term started calling all "comes into play" creatures like this, and so it stays up to our days.
Old art's been iconic, but to the new one I can only applaud. A whole story is there - without the help of flavour text!
Considered a bit costy nowdays, Nekrataal is still a force to reckon with. Card advantage stays being card advantage.

The collector's number can't have been 187 in Visions, the set only had 167 cards. The California penal code for murder seems more likely.

Comes into play effects are fun, and everyone loves card advantage. I'm not and old school player, so I don't remember Nekrataal's heyday, but I can clearly see the quality. Good design, good card.

Damn, he really looks like Kratos (except of baggy pants) in this artwork.

I was playing the online version of mtg on the xbox. My friend was playing the blue deck and there were two other kids playing green and white. I was playing black. This single, beast of a card, destroyed 2 duskdale worms, verdant force, molimo, purity, baneslayer, and a few others with the help of a few boomerangs and unsummons. Finally, the white deck, who was really ***ed, played wrath of god on the poor guy. Next turn I got raise dead and he quit.

4/5, even after his effect, he's a 2/1 with first strike so he's not dead weight.

Aah, the original 187 creature. This was the first playable CIP creature, so the California penal code for murder stuck thereafter because of him.
And @dfeyder, back in the day when creature removal wasn't as cheap and abundant as nowadays, this was more than appropiately costed, especially when you take the card advantage into account.

The whole flavour/mechanics package of this card appeals to me. The artwork does a good job of showing Nekrataal before he leaps onto the battlefield, Slaughter Cry style. I don't even know what Nekrataal means, but it sounds awesome.

@dfeyder: What are you talking about? This isn't a dark banishing, it is a terror and a Coiled Tinviper combined into 1 (!) card, it gives you board control and a body to hit/ defend, totally worth his costs.

Terror for 1Black and a 2/1 first strike for 1Black... in a single card. Sweet.

Interesting: The Oracle Text has this version down with a different flavour text than the other versions. But there is no flavour text as printed..

@JovianHomarid

That's because some 10th Edition foils didn't have reminder text on them (in this case, none with the First Strike ability) and thus there's room on the card for flavor text, so some foils got flavor text even though they didn't have any on the non-foil version.

@Helianthus Visions only had 167 cards, so this guys collector's number couldn't have been 187. In reality its that other thing you said (penal code 187)
