One of my favorite and most frequently used cards back in the days of revised. In the right deck, this thing can gain you a copious amount of life. Combine it with Library of Leng and Howling Mine for some serious lifegain/card advantage.

Life gain isn't always bad.
If you can gain 40 life in 3 turns, why not?

Whoa. This, and Venser's Journal together are incredible! There's a Mirrodin Beseiged card that has power and toughness equal to the number of cards in your hand and "whenever you draw a card, each opponent loses 1 life." Can someone tell me what it's called? I always screw the advanced searches.

This used to be restricted as it stalled games in multiples. It seems that that isn't the case anymore.

Can an agro deck kill a control deck with four of these out?

Ivory Tower is the ultimate life gain artifact out of Revised. And yes, for a long while, it was restricted in tournament play. At 1 mana, a first turn Ivory Tower made burn players shriek in horror. It was the main reason that burn needed to play Shatter and white weenie needed to play Disenchant. Ivory Tower could stall games so that lockdown decks could get the pieces in place to win against the faster paced decks.
