I don't like Spikes. They're slugs, and they aren't as efficient as Graft.

In most cases, graft is more powerful, but spikes can place their counters on creatures (or animated lands) after they've come into play.

They also work really well together if you have a doubling season. You can remove one counter and target either another spike or itself to place 2 counters on it.

Any kind of slug tribe is fine by me! It's nice that Wizards remembered Spikes when the nostalgia block rolled around.

I hate it when all people can only think about is how well things work with doubling season. Doubling season, intruder alarm, and isochron scepter. 3 cards that require no thought at all.

spike rogue if you want to get that +1/+1 token off the land again

Graft sucks. You can only move one counter when a creature comes into play. These guys can move as many as they want, and at instant speed. Beat that.

This guy goes nuts with proliferate.

I love proliferate.

I drew two of these in my very first Time Spiral Tournament Pack!! One normal, one foil. Yep, there would have been better possibilities...

Was made up by getting Dragonstorm as a timeshifted card though, gotta love a Starter with five rares!!

Instead of arguing about how Spike > Graft or the other way around, why not use both? All Spikes have the ability to utilize +1/+1 counters on them and Graft is good at pass them around and provide abilities (like the Plaxcaster Frogling). They make good combos together.

To elaborate on gongshowninja's comment, if you have Kraj out and use the tiller's second ability Kraj will gain the activated abilities of the targeted land. Naturally, this lends itself to shenanigans, the most retarded of which is probably using Thespian's Stage to permanently turn Kraj into a land. Um, yay?

Nearly every card in Time Spiral was a throwback to at least one previously printed card.

This card references the Spike creatures from Tempest block, such as Spike Breeder.

This was my finisher in blue-green proliferate at one point. I ran storage lands alongside Thrummingbird, Tezzeret's Gambit, Contaigon Clasp and other such nonsense. I'd tap one storage land, turn a few lands into 3/3s, pump them with more proliferate and swing for victory. Sadly, not super useful outside that sort of deck, since you give up lands for only semi-efficient creatures.
