The C0ckatrice's ability is superior to deathtouch because no damage needs to be dealt for the ability to trigger. A 5-star combo with LURE is required to note. At 3GG it is slightly expensive except for heavy Green.

WHY IS ITS CREATURE TYPE FREAKIN' ***ATRICE??? Can't it be bird?

It's a ***atrice because ***atrices and basilisks are traditionally different. Similar ability, different creature. Shivan Dragon has built-in firebreathing and so does Wall of Fire. Should Wall of Fire's type be Dragon?

Why is it that the censorship blocks ***atrice, Royal Assassin, Cumber Stone and words like "classic", but we're able to type "fucks"?

Oh, and this guy isn't so silly when you imagine him bigger. The picture has nothing to scale him against so it's easy to assume he's the size of a chicken.

Oh god, people are so ignorant of mythology around here, surprisingly enough. Let me clarify some things:
1. ***atrices are NOT birds or reptiles or any combination between the two. They are fantastical monsters with only superficial resemblances to real animals, and they have the same roots as and are practically indistinguishable from "basilisks" in mythology, basically being two different names for the same monster.
2. The ***atrice or basilisk or whatever one would call it did indeed kill with their gaze, and sometimes possessed toxic breath. It was a popular point in tales about them that the hero killed them by presenting them with a mirror.
3. Gorgons, on the other hand, are much older and basically unrelated monsters that turned people to stone by being so ugly and monstrous that creatures literally would die from seeing them.
Hope that cleared some things up.

@metalevolence: Actually, in Alpha, green got better flying than black or red. Compare Scryb Sprites to Goblin Balloon Brigade (the latter also being an uncommon) or...black gets Will o' the Wisp at rare, so yeah. If anything, ***atrice here is why green doesn't get flying, because you'd want to put Lure on this guy, but an evasion ability ruins that synergy. Granted, these days it's "target creature must block this turn if able" (which is stupid and, near the end of the game, tautological) more than "all creatures block enchanted creature if able".
By the way, I'm sure he goes well with Roo***er Thief, filter people. Can't we be like the 4chan filters and make the message funny? Like change "seven" to "over nine thousand" or "a meme" to "stupid" and "not a meme" to "really stupid"?

Seriously, people, you don't need to self-censor Cockatrice. I'm all for being respectful and civil, and the kindness and maturity of the Gatherer community overall is awesome, but for fuck's sake it's not like 'homogenous' is an offensive word just because it contains the prefix homo-.
Alternatively, if Gatherer is auto-censoring you, verify that you're using the latest version and uncheck each "Parental Controls" option under Settings.

They changed Lycanthropes (Lesser Werewolf, Greater Werewolf) into Human Wolf as well, so why not this specimen? According to Mythology, a Cóckatrice is a chimera of a two-legged dragon with a rooster's head, so that would make it Dragon Bird. Which is a pretty rad type combination.
Then again, they usually keep quirky types for a reason. (At least since the Grand Creature Type Update). For example, Kavu could be Lizard Beasts, Homarids could be Crabs, and Cephalids could Octopuses instead.
Although, Kavu aside, seeing how all other humanoid, animal-based species don't get a seperate type either, i actually think they shouldn't have a seperate type: There's literally an example for every major animal species: We have Aven (Birds), Nantuko (Insects), Leonin (Cats), Nezumi (Rats) and most notably Orochi (Snakes), which look less similar to actual Snakes than Homarids or Cephalids do to their respective species.
Edit: Alright, i could probably have guessed it, but it looks like Wizard kept that type because they still had plans with it: It seems there will be Cóckatrices (that's the plural term, right?) in M14, like Deathgaze Cóckatrice*. Well, maybe it's just this one. But if there are more, expect them all to have Flying and Deathtouch.
Still, i don't get why they wouldn't just make them Dragon Birds. I mean, come on - that's one of the coolest type combinations since Simic's Crocodile Frog.
*Unfortunately, the word filter won't allow me to link to this card by name, and since i don't know the multiverse ID yet, i'll just link the first part of its name (which will currently result in the only card that starts with those letters).

Finally getting a new Cockatrice in M14, but... it looks pretty bleak.
The way the bestiaries had it, the basilisk/***atrice were the result of a rooster's egg (yes, you read that correctly) being incubated non-stop by a toad. The name "***atrice" may in some way be related to the egg element; originally, it was just "basilisk". That one means "little king", because it was held to be the king of serpents, looking like a small viper with a white crest. So I'd guess that when the rooster's egg bit came up, that's when the basilisk/***atrice began to sport feathers.
Note, by the way, that the bestiaries didn't think the gaze or breath of the basilisk/***atrice killed by petrification. Rather, it was by inducing a severe case of poisoning. How bad? The basilisk's breath was supposed to kill EVERYTHING in a radius of a few miles except the rue plant (the Sahara Desert? Their doing.), and could even make rocks EXPLODE. That latter may have to do with the idea that serpent venom was incendiary in some way, simply because snakebite victims felt a burning sensation at the wound ("seraphim" was, in fact, normally applied to ordinary vipers in the Hebrew original of the Old Testament, precisely because of that sensation). Thus, you either got killed outright, or suffered spontaneous combustion. Stabbing a basilisk was a perilous because the venom was in their blood, too, and would wick right up the spear and kill you at the moment of contact. Best thing to do was to drop a weasel, supposedly horribly filthy as a matter of course, into a basilisk's den, and wait for them to kill each other with their respective odors.
So, if you wanted to be picky, this COULD be a Snake Bird. But then, the chimerae in Theros aren't Lion Goats or the like (sorry Goatnapper).
