Shatter has been picked on over the years. It has been in most core sets, but there have always been cards that are always cards with additional effects that get printed at the same mana cost. Cards that are strictly better than Shatter:
Ancient Grudge, Fury Charm, Shattering Pulse, and Smash to Smithereens

Don't forget about Shattering Spree.

It's a good card for new players, or anyone for that matter. Artefact distruction for one Red and one Colourless. Simple and effective.

shattering spree isn't "strictly better" because it's a sorcery. I'd certainly it's simply better than shatter, though

actually, fury charm is not strictly better than shatter and neather is smash to smithereens,what if an opponint spelljacks it, than your being effected by the other parts of the card ensted. the buy/flashback affects can't be used by the opponent though, so the other two are strictly better.

@bijart_dauth; if you pump spelljack into the "better" equation, you need to consider Mindslaver as well.
If you have seven lands and two artifacts after an opponent hits you with mindslaver, and you can either have Shattering Pulse, Ancient grudge, or shatter, which leaves you with the best board position? Shatter of course.
I don't subscribe to "better" however. I subscribe to better.

@bjart-dauth its still strictly better, just for the opponent not you, in genral factring in rediricct/shunt like abittys are stupid "i shunt your lighting bolt" is smarter (mind you in most cases not very smart at all) then "i shunt your shock" see what i mean, the card is still better.
