Unless you are playing a serious arcane deck, this is a fairly weak card. It's a lot to pay for a situational effect, and discard is at its best early game. Even if you want to play an arcane deck, why are you in black? Green (Hana Kami) and red (Ire of Kaminari) offer more incentive, as does blue.

Is it just me, or is his right hand backwards? The thumb is on the wrong side.

"Is it just me, or is his right hand backwards? The thumb is on the wrong side."

Haha! It does look like that at first glance. But look closer: on both sides of his nose the skin has the same flattened shape. He's not placing his thumb on his face, but it's hard to see the contour of his hand with the lack of contrast.

The first tragedy is its cost, the second is sorcery speed, the third is Kamigawa in general.

Two cards AT RANDOM -> BlackBlack
Three cards AT OPPONENT'S CHOICE -> 3BlackBlack
There's something wrong here...

This card is NOT overcosted. Compare Fugue, Mindstab, and Hypnotic Cloud.

The issue is really that discard effects at-cost become undesirable above "discard two." In a dedicated discard deck, your opponent probably won't have three cards in hand by the time you can cast this, and in any other type of deck, you're more likely to use smaller discard that you can control (like Duress) rather than going for sheer number of cards to discard.

Mind Rot costs {2}{B}, which is 3 CMC for 2 cards, this adds 1 more discard for {1}{B}, so it is more on average for the last card; however the fact that it is all one card is worth it. 2 Mind Rot's would be {4}{B}{B}, which is 1 more mana for an extra card. again, you have now used 2 of your cards and you lose card advantage. In other words, this card ain't half bad. 3/5

EDIT::
Just ordered 1000 random cards online from a nameless source,Frog and Ogre or something like that. Anyway, they must have read my post because they sent me 41 of these. DOH!

It IS overcosted. Mindstab thrull was the original. Every *good* discard card discards at a 1-to-1 except Mind Twist. Every other discard, including some that work at 1-to-1 are considered mediocre at best.

@Paolino: The wrong thing is that Hymn to Tourach is generally considered too far above par in terms of discard. Bit of a brutal comparison. This still sucks though.

However, I only have one, and it's foil. And this looks AMAZING in foil. Worth getting one just for that reason alone.

@palino That broken monstrosity has no right to be compared to anything.

Anyways... call this weak all you want. But when your opponent is holding three cards in his hand, this is the last spell he will want to see you cast. Can close a game out and leave your opponent crushed. Deserves at least a 2.5/5 for that.

it deserves the 5 mana. 3 cards is a lot and probably you will leave your opponent with the hand empty. compare it to monomania.
